Ronaldo has been named the world’s most marketable player

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the world’s most marketable player, according to a new report by sports marketing experts Repucom.

Portuguese soccer hero Ronaldo the list and earned some extra bragging rights in the changing room, with a staggering 83.9 per cent of the world’s population knowing who he is.

Ronaldo has plenty to remember 2014 about already, as he has won his second FIFA Ballon d’Or global player of the year and Champions League winners medal.

The Repucom report found he was the most well-known and “trend-setting” footballer in the game today.

The former Manchester United striker beat off fierce competition from Argentinian player Lionel Messi to the top spot. 

He scored another victory against Messi, who he surpassed to scoop the title of the UEFA Champion League’s top scorer, with a record breaking 17 goals.

British sports star Wayne Rooney, came in at 5th place on the marketability list, with Fernando Torres making a surprise appearance in the 4th spot, after struggling to adjust to life at Stamford Bridge, following his £50 million transfer from Liverpool FC.

The list which included Facebook likes and Twitter followers showed the Madeira born striker has a staggering 26 million Twitter followers, who avidly watch his daily musings and crave constant access to his thoughts.

Paul Smith, founder and boss of Repucom said: “With just over a fortnight left before the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Brazil, the world’s attention is focussed on the competing teams and players.

“The World Cup is the most-watched sporting event in the world and as such, big brands, official partners or otherwise, will, and are, using its global appeal to drive sales.

“Ronaldo is an endorser’s dream. His value is as important to the teams he plays for as they are for the companies that endorse him.”

Third place on the list is Gerard Piqué, who has shot to more famous heights after having become involved with the famous hip-shaking Colombian singer Shakira.
