How far Los Blancos are able to go in Europe this season may depend on the form of Cristiano Ronaldo. The 32-year-old Portuguese superstar has unfortunately started to show some signs of decline. Ronaldo turned in a dour performance over the weekend in the team’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo, and the defending Champions League title holders currently sit a distant fourth in La Liga on just 32 points.

On Wednesday, Spanish outlet Diario Gol reported that Ronaldo’s teammate, Sergio Ramos, has urged the club’s brass to drop Ronaldo for a period of time. Ramos reportedly wants Ronaldo to get some time off in an attempt to rediscover his currently missing world-class form.

The report says that Ramos also wants the likes of Karim Benzema, Marcelo and Raphael Varane to enjoy a stint on the sidelines in order to recuperate.

While Ramos may want one thing, it’s difficult to imagine Zinedine Zidane actually dropping his most high-profile player. Earlier this week, Zidane said, “I can’t imagine a Real Madrid without Cristiano, not at all. He’s a Madrid player and he wants to finish his career here. I don’t see him playing anywhere else.”

Despite Ronaldo’s recent dip in form, the superstar has reportedly drawn the interest of defending Premier League champions Chelsea. With former Madrid striker Alvaro Morata struggling to stay consistent in his first season in England, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has reportedly toyed with the idea of replacing him with Ronaldo, if the latter has an interest in returning to the Premier League.

If this is the case and CR7 does make a move to Chelsea, it could lead to a lot of goals for them next season. With little to play for domestically, it may make sense for Zidane to give Ronaldo some time to try and find himself. That said, doing so may risk upsetting the player, which is something Zidane certainly would not want to do. If Ronaldo believes that continuing to play is the best way for him to find his form, then he’ll play.

Madrid will resume La Liga play on Saturday when they take on Villarreal, who sit third in the league, from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo had to cop a fair amount of criticism after blunt performances against Germany and Denmark in Portugal’s opening two games, with rumblings of international retirement being banded about in the press. However, like all great players, CR7 has bounced back to show his worth when it matters, with man-of-the-match performances and three goals against Netherlands and Czech Republic.

After a record-setting domestic season with Real Madrid expectations on the ex-Manchester United forward have gone through the roof, as Portugal rely on the attacker heavily to provide a cutting-edge in the last third. Although Paulo Bento’s men have recorded some good victories in their last games, they will need to step up another level to compete with and challenge world champions Spain.

Ronaldo will know his opponents on Wednesday well, as he will be in direct competition with Los Blancos team-mates Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso, and take-on other La Liga players that he clashes with on a regular basis. That said, the Spanish side will be more than aware of Ronaldo’s threat, and the Portuguese star can expect close attention from the likes of Arbeloa and Sergio Busquets.

Ronaldo’s individual skill and ability to win the game by himself has been shown both for Real Madrid and Portugal in the recent past, but against Spain the Iberian nation will need the star to play for the team, act like a captain and forget about individual ambition. The likes of Nani, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Moutinho and others will strive to aid their skipper and a collective team effort will be need to conquer the holders.

Portugal go into the game as underdogs, and rightly so given the calibre and record of success of their opponents. However, Ronaldo will know that the game and the potential remainder of the tournament give him the chance to write history and put a stake in the ground. As his personal battle with Lionel Messi wages on, if CR7 can captain the Iberian nation to an unlikely tournament victory he would surely command the Ballon d’Or trophy once more, and do something that the Barcelona man has failed to; succeed on the international scene.

Ronaldo’s name is likely to go down alongside some of the greats when he hangs up his boots, but inspiring an unfancied Portugal team to glory in Ukraine and Poland would be a monumental achievement. Wednesday is Cristiano Ronaldo’s date with destiny, as the star attempts to be spoken of in the same breath as Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and the best in the game’s history.

However, Ronaldo had a bit of history in Champions League penalty kick. On season 2007/08 when he was still with Manchester United, he failed to execute twice.

The first time was at Camp Nou, at Champions League final. ManUtd rewarded with a penalty  after Gabriel Milito caught on a handsball early of the game. At that time, ManUtd still won the Trophy since the match ended with 0-0, while The Red Devils won the first leg of 1-0.

Second time was against Chelsea, also in the Champions League final, where he failed to take the penalty in the extra round. The  situation was similar when he failed against Bayern Munich yesterday. But while on his 2 Champions League penalties failure he still managed to win the game in the end, but not this time. With Real Madrid, it had stopped him from getting to the final round, followed by his other colleagues failed penalty kick, Kaka and Sergio Ramos.

On the second leg of Copa Clasico, Real Madrid was left behind with 2 goals from Barcelona at the first half. However at the second half, the White team started a fast manouver to strikes Barcelona.

Real Madrid was finally able to score through Ramos header, but the ref disallowed the goal unfairly. At minute 68th, Ronaldo brought hope for the team with his goal, followed by Karim Benzema goal 4 minutes later. Madrid kept pushing Barcelona to the edge, as the host looked miserable. Barca then rely on the referee to get the advantage on stopping Madrid’s move, with Sergio Ramos second yellow card 5 minutes before the match ended. Ramos received the card for making a save and clean challenge over Busquets. It was clearly a wrong judgement from the ref.

With the tie result of 2-2, Barcelona finally made it to the Copa del Rey semi-final.

Until the final decision is taken, Real Madridâ€s Cristiano Ronaldo will be facing a two-match ban after breaking the nose of Malaga defender Mtiliga.

The majority of footballâ€s public have criticized Ronaldo for violent conduct but some also have a different judgment as they believe that there was no intent from the player when he elbowed his opponent.

Now, as Real Madrid are pursuing their appeal, Real Madridâ€s Sergio Ramos has come in defense of Los Blancos’ star player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Cristiano had no intention of hurting the player. We [Real Madrid] believe that the punishment is unjust.

Ramos then underlined the effect that Ronaldoâ€s absence could have on the squad:

“There are two matches that he would have to seat out. He will be a big loss for Real Madrid. Cristiano has got the support of the entire squad and everyone thinks the same thing: he was just trying to get past the player.”

When asked to compare Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s elbow incident with Lionel Messiâ€s gesture in Barcelonaâ€s 4-0 victory against Sevilla two weeks ago, Sergio Ramos said:

“Messi was lucky not to hit the defender [Valiente] in the face but Cristiano had the bad luck of breaking the nose of the defender [Mtiliga].”

Real Madrid will have to wait a bit more time before knowing whether they have won the case which they filed to the Appeals Committee.

According to Cristiano Ronaldo himself, the next story could be positive.

“Iâ€m confident in the case that the club will present on my behalf and that the Committee will reduce the punishment.”

Nereida Gallardoâ€s ex-boyfriend, Sergio Ramos, will be united with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid next season. The 23-year-old was expected to be the rival of Ronaldo – had the Portuguese signed for Madrid last year.

But now, it seems like there is no resentment from Ramos towards Ronaldo, despite having shared the same woman, Nereida Gallardo.

According to Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s astronomical salary sum will not even be an issue. Speaking to the Mirror, the Spanish defender affirmed:

“People are always talking about what footballers are earning, but the truth is that the only people who know are the club, the player and the playerâ€s agent,”

“If youâ€re happy with your own wages, you wonâ€t be worried about what others are making. It is up to your agent to look after your contract, and Madrid look after their players very well so I donâ€t see any problems in that regards.”

Then defending Real Madridâ€s will of creating an all-star team, Sergio Ramos said of Ronaldo:

“Madrid must always have the best footballers in the world because we are the biggest and most famous club. Itâ€s as simple as that.

“Cristiano has been the best player in the world for the last two years and it is only right that he wears the white shirt of Madrid. When you put on this shirt, you know that youâ€ve arrived at the very top. There is no greater honour.”

Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s former teammate at Manchester United, Ruud Van Nilsterooy, also salutes Cristiano Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu:

“Good players are always welcome. Cristiano is fantastic,”

“He is very young, but he has a lot of experience after playing in the World Cup, Euro, Champions League and English competitions.”

“He is strong both physically and technically and I think that he has everything,”

During these last three weeks, they have been trying to negotiate with the English Champions; Real has also come up with different transfer prices – all of them being attractive enough to captivate Ronaldo’s mind and possibly push Man United to sell their uncommitted star winger.

On the other side, Real Madrid is imitating Manchester United’s game, which consists in trying to keep a player in his present club by resisting the opposition.

The Spanish Champions are currently concentrating on improving their image as regards to Robinho’s habitual comments against them; the young player has made it clear since last year that he wants to quit Madrid, stating so many times that he felt like a slave and that his salary was too low.

The Brazilian forward has strongly been linked with a move to Scolari’s Chelsea with a deal said to cost around 30 million pounds. However, in an interview, Ramon Calderon declared that Robinho was worth more than 60 million euros, and that the young man was not for sale either.

Well, the most ironic thing in these transfer wars is that if Real Madrid is lucky and comes out victorious from the double game, it will be hugely interesting to see Cristiano Ronaldo, Robinho, and Sergio Ramos all in the same team.

With Sergio Ramos’ private story with Nereida and with Robinho angered by Calderon’s previous decision to sell him as part of Ronaldo’s transfer deal, it will be very hard to predict how these three players will cooperate in Real Madrid.
