The truth is that Ronaldo’s sweet dream has to do with football matters and with the World Cup especially.

Ahead of the draw for the group stages of South Africa 2010 which will take place on Friday at 17:00 GMT, Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his desire to meet Spain in the final of the World Cup next summer.

The Portugal captain declared to AS:

“Our goal was to qualify for South Africa [2010] and we succeeded. I don’t want to face Spain too early [in the World Cup tournament].”

He added:

“It would be best to do so in the final. That would be a dream.”

However, Cristiano Ronaldo also admitted that it won’t be easy to reach the sky. He avowed:

“It is going to be a difficult tournament. We’ll be prepared anyway, and then the rest will be up to what God wants.”

With the performances and results that Portugal created since 2008, the majority of the public find it hard to imagine the 2006 World Cup semi-finalists go all the way to glory in South Africa.

Yes, the road was tough and at a point, it even seemed like the 2004 European finalists would not make it. Portugal were in danger of missing out on a top two finish in the group stages.

However, after benefiting from Sweden’s slip on match-day 9, the Portuguese were offered a final chance to reach South Africa 2010 by grabbing play-off tickets.

The indeed took all of their chances by clinching the maximum six points and they finished just behind Denmark in second place.

Portugal were paired against Bosnia Herzegovina which they hosted in the first leg. Bruno Alves’ lone goal separated the two sides and gave Portugal a vital edge ahead of the second leg that was played last night in Zenica.

The 1-0 advantage meant that even a 2-1 defeat away to Bosnia Herzegovina would have seen the Portuguese break through to the World Cup that will take stage next year.

Having being so wasteful in the first leg, Carlos Queiros’ side feared that the home side will go all out to attack them. But at the relief of the Portuguese, Bosnia showed little signs of aggressiveness throughout the game.

The first period ended goalless with Portugal looking more likely to score and win. Then came the decisive moment that every Portuguese fans were waiting for: the GOAL!

Manchester United’s winger Luis Nani provided a cross that found the foot of Raul Meireles who simply had to tap the ball into the back of the net.

At that point, Portugal had not only broken the dead lock but also drawn an unbreakable wall between them and their opponents, Bosnia Herzegovina.

With Raul Meireles’ 56th minute opener, it meant that the hosts on the night had to find three goals in less than forty minutes against a Portuguese side that grew more dominant as time passed by.

Well, it wasn’t to be; Portugal kept a clean sheet to seal their 2-0 aggregate over Bosnia Herzegovina which ultimately saw them qualify into the finals of the World Cup that will come up next year.

However, the 2004 European Championship runners-upâ€s relief was tarnished by Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s fitness issues. The Real Madrid winger suffered another ankle injury and had to leave the pitch even before half time.

Portugal badly needed to come out victorious from the encounter on Saturday. At the same time, they had to pray that Sweden did not beat the Danes in Denmark.

That is exactly what happened indeed. Cristiano Ronaldo set up Atletico Madridâ€s Simao Sabrosa for the opening goal at the 17th minute. In fact, Hungaryâ€s goalkeeper Gabor Babos only had himself to blame for that goal as he should have kept hold of Ronaldoâ€s ball from a cross.

Portugal were in search of a second goal and despite trying hard, they could not manage to do so in the first period. Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s substitution on 30 minutes almost inflicted an insurmountable fear on the Portuguese. Portugal coach Carlos Queiros admitted Ronaldo’s contribution for the team’s victory on Saturday night. He stated:

“Ronaldo’s involvement in the first goal was crucial in calming us down.

“It is unfortunate that he was injured.”

Fortunately enough for Ronaldoâ€s country, the second period was all theirs. Striker Liedson doubled Portugalâ€s tally on 73 minutes with a header and Simao Sabrosa grabbed his brace 11 minutes from normal time with a terrific shot.

With Sweden losing away to Denmark, Portugalâ€s victory over Hungary took them up to second in the table. The Portuguese chances of clinching an automatic place in the finals is well and truly dead as five points separate them from the leaders Denmark with one game remaining.

On Wednesday, Portugal play against Malta but one man who will definitely miss this match is captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
