It was the turn of Manchester Unitedâ€s younger lads to prove their worth on Sunday afternoon after Ferguson opted to rest most of his big guns. Players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and even Cristiano Ronaldo were out of the squad that had to face David Moyes†hungry Toffees.

Quite a questionable decision there from the 67-year-old Scot, but this is all what the thousands of supporters that had empty their wallet to witness Unitedâ€s glory could see: young players surrounded by some big names like Ferdinand and Vidic with the task of keeping the hopes of an unprecedented quintuple alive by ousting Everton to reach the FA Cup final.

The story could have been different if Mike Riley had awarded Manchester United a penalty when Danny Welbeck was fouled inside the box. But the referee wrongly decided that the play should go on, allowing the game to go all the wire to extra time and penalties.

Unfortunately though for the Red Devils, this game of lottery did not favor them this time round. Manchester United had the better of luck against Chelsea in the Champions League final, against Portsmouth in the Community Shield and, against Tottenham in the Carling Cup final at Wembley, but not this time.

Everton’s Tim Cahill missed the first kick of the penalty shootout as he sent the ball over the cross bar, however this didnâ€t prove as costly to Everton as it could have been.

Berbatov’s low drive was easily saved by Tim Howard, meaning that the Bulgarian had wasted Manchester Unitedâ€s first penalty kick. Ferdinand suffered the same fate and though Vidic and Anderson converted their penalties, it was the Merseyside Blues that celebrated at the end of it all with Jagielka scoring the winner.

So Manchester United are out of the FA Cup again but the challenge for the Premiership and Champions League titles are still alive…

Manchester United took a step closer to achieving Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s daring dream of winning the quadruple this year when the Champions of the world came face to face against the defending champions of the Carling Cup.

With the crucial second leg match against Inter coming up in less than two weeks time and a couple of Premier League games in between, Sir Alex Ferguson opted to fill his Man United squad with young players like Gibson and Welbeck.

Cristiano Ronaldo was outstanding throughout the game, testing Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes twice in the opening 6 minutes of the match. Tottenham were also attacking at the other end with Darren Bent and Lennon. However, putting the ball past the cross line remained a problem for both sides.

At the Red Devils†displeasure, the game went all the way down to penalties when it really shouldnâ€t have been the case.

Manchester Unitedâ€s young winger Nani was guilty of missing a glorious opportunity to seal the victory for the Reds with seconds remaining in normal time when Ronaldoâ€s shot hit the post; the 22 year old failed to score on the rebound.

But Nani wasnâ€t the only one to blame for letting the game go into extra time. The referee on the day, Chris Foy, was far less than impressive. He denied United from having a penalty during the 90 minutes when it was clear that Ronaldo was fouled in the box by skipper Ledley King. Instead, he had the Portuguese Star winger booked for diving.

This incident was one of the many unjust decisions taking by Chris Foy; on the other hand, John Oâ€Shea should also have seen red for a second bookable offense on Luca Modric. Thanks to Ben Fosterâ€s tremendous performance in goal for Manchester United in the last twenty minutes of the game, Spurs were pushed all the way down to the “game of lottery”.

Ben Foster had already provided United with a one-goal advantage after saving Oâ€Haraâ€s kick. It was time for the World Player of the Year to step in and score his third goal in this competition and settle the score line to 3-1 in favor of the Reds.

Every Mancunian supporter was hoping that the number 7 ace wouldnâ€t suffer the fate of missing his spot kick and put his side into trouble as it was the case back in 2008 in the Champions League final in Moscow.
Confident about his own ability and skill, the Portuguese Superstar converted his penalty with a wonderful finish.

His opposite number, Tottenhamâ€s David Bentley had put his shot wide just after; it was down to youngster Anderson to win the Carling Cup for Manchester United.
As he had it in the Champions League final in Moscow, Anderson didnâ€t waste his penalty – sending his Brazilian counterpart Heurelho Gomes the wrong way to ensure Manchester Unitedâ€s first domestic title of the season.

After the match, Ronaldo was full of joy and optimism about Manchester Unitedâ€s success this year:

“It is quite difficult to achieve but we are going from game to game,” Ronaldo told The Sun, concerning the possibility of clinching four trophies this season.

“We always have the opportunity to win everything. Weâ€ve won this cup and now we donâ€t have much time to celebrate.”

With Liverpool dropping more points earlier in the weekend, the Premiership looks set to be Unitedâ€s. The FA Cup is almost at its half-way point only, with Man U still in the running, while the outcome of the second leg clash against Inter Milan at Old Trafford will determine if the European Champions are still in contention to retain their title.

Manchester Unitedâ€s victory in the Carling Cup on Sunday means that Ronaldoâ€s dream of winning the quadruple is still a possibility. Time will tell whether the Reds will scoop the remaining three trophies.

A 59 minute strike made the red crowd go bananas as Man U were then leading Wigan 3-0 at that stage. Most of all, Ronaldo had responded to the publicâ€s critics by scoring in the final.
The so-called dancing clown therefore proved that he was a talented chap capable of scoring on big occasions.

Since then, Cristiano Ronaldo has developed into a matured Superstar winger and a prolific goal scorer. The Fifa Player of the year is currently on an impressive form and after working so hard against Inter, he might just get the right touch at Wembley on Sunday.

One thing we hope he doesn’t get of course is a booking – like in the 2006 final when he removed his shirt.

The Portuguese Star became the victim of wrong judgement (for the thousandth time this season) as good officiating would have see him hit his 22nd brace for United and his 15th goal of the season.

However, if the match referee Rob Styles was the devil of the day, Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t an angel either. The hot-tempered Star winger broke controversy once more after cameras showed him spitting at Derby’s Robbie Savage.

Cristiano Ronaldo is not the only footballer in the world to behave in such a way after being infuriated. The greatest stars like Lionel Messi, John Terry and Frank Rikjaard have all done the same thing in the middle of their rage.

It was certainly not the best way to defend himself and only luck saved him from seeing red for the second time this season.

After finally deciding to stay at least one more year at Old Trafford, Cristiano had the opportunity to witness Manchester Unitedâ€s Community Shield triumph on Sunday afternoon at the Wembley Stadium.

The Portuguese star had to seat along side English striker Wayne Rooney, as both are currently recovering from injury. The English champions draw goalless with Pompy in a game that could have seen goalkeeper David James become the man of the match.

Nani assumed Ronaldoâ€s responsibility and was awesome in the wings – setting Fletcher who failed to break the dead lock, and dribbling past James only for his shot to be cleared by Glenn Johnson.

In the second half, Carlos Tevez had a clear appeal on penalty turned down by the referee. The end of the ninety minutes signified that the winner of the game had to be decided through a penalty shoot-out.

Tevez had the chance to revenge himself and indeed did not miss his spot kick. Giggs and Carrick also converted their kicks unlike Portsmouthâ€s Diarra and Johnson.

3 – 1 was the final score line, meaning that Alex Fergusonâ€s side has started its campaign on a good track. Ronaldo should wait a little while – six weeks at least – to help his club enjoy domestic and international success as the Red Devils aim to defend their EPL and Champions League titles.

The game started with end-to-end football, but quickly slowed with long balls, sloppy passing and Villa getting a lot of men behind the ball.

It took the introduction of Rooney in the last 20 mins to spice things up. He instantly added the needed flair to the game. Ronaldo got the first goal from a nice cross from Giggs. Rooney then finished the game off in the last minute with a low drive beyond Carson.
