La Liga officials have long claimed that Spanish employment law forces clubs to attach a buy-out clause to each player’s contract, but these numbers were largely thought to be hypothetical maximums. That is, at least, until Neymar’s €222 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris-St Germain this summer, in which the French cash kings lodged the full amount as a deposit with the league after the Blaugrana attempted to block the move at every turn.

As a result of such ludicrous figures now changing hands, the buy-out clauses of some of La Liga’s top stars have come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks. And, according to the Portuguese star’s contract with Real, Ronaldo is the joint-most valuable player in the world, with his buy-out – and surprisingly, that of teammate Karim Benzema – standing at a stunning €1 billion.

Lionel Messi, by comparison, has a relatively paltry buy-out clause standing at €300 million, with nine La Liga players deemed hypothetically more valuable than him. Of course, a large part of the figure being relatively “low” is Barcelona’s trust in their star man not to leave the club he so deeply cherishes.

While it would seem one billion euros should be enough to deter potential poachers, the past year has shown us crazy things do happen in football, and no amount of money for the signature of Cristiano Ronaldo can now be considered pure fantasy.

The Portugal international has the backing of his team-mates in the race for the individual award, and the Frenchman is proud of Madrid’s representation among the final 23

The Portugal international faces competition from Barcelona duo Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi in the race for the prestigious individual award, but he can count on his team-mates’ support.

“Who do I want to win the Ballon d’Or? Cristiano Ronaldo. We’re all behind him at Madrid,” Benzema was quoted as saying by France Football.

The Frenchman then went on to voice his delight with the number of representatives Madrid had on the list of 23 players, before it was cut down to the three finalists.

“With six players among the final 23 players, Madrid are already the team with the most players on that list, so we won that game.”

The 2012 Fifa Ballon d’Or winner will be announced on January 7.

Things have not gone according to plan so far for the Spanish champions in 2012-13, as erratic form has blighted early season ambition. A criticism of Ronaldo, and of Ballon d’Or holder and key rival Lionel Messi, is that he does not replicate his form and ability from the club game onto the international scene. On the second leg of Copa Clasico, Real Madrid was left behind with 2 goals from Barcelona at the first half. However at the second half, the White team started a fast manouver to strikes Barcelona.

Real Madrid was finally able to score through Ramos header, but the ref disallowed the goal unfairly. At minute 68th, Ronaldo brought hope for the team with his goal, followed by Karim Benzema goal 4 minutes later. Madrid kept pushing Barcelona to the edge, as the host looked miserable. Barca then rely on the referee to get the advantage on stopping Madrid’s move, with Sergio Ramos second yellow card 5 minutes before the match ended. Ramos received the card for making a save and clean challenge over Busquets. It was clearly a wrong judgement from the ref.

With the tie result of 2-2, Barcelona finally made it to the Copa del Rey semi-final.
