Things have not gone according to plan so far for the Spanish champions in 2012-13, as erratic form has blighted early season ambition. Poor results in the Primera Division see the capital-city side trailing Barcelona by eight points already. For 3 whole year with Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to add another Balon D’Or trophy in his collection. It was hard enough to watch Lionel Messi walked away with the title, but for him to win it 3 consecutive years just unbearable. This year, hopefully it will be different. Why ? Because finally, his well performance has helped Los Blancos  in stopping Barcelona’s domination in Spanish league.

The question is, was it enough ?

Since he joined Real Madrid, he had a bit hard time to overcome the European football competition. 3 years now and still no Champions league title.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s personal record in Champions League competition last season was actually far from disappointing. He collected 10 goals,  and helped Real Madrid to reach the semi-finals round. But once again, he lost to Lionel Messi who became CL top scorer by grabbing 14 goals.

Luckily this year, Cristiano Ronaldo has an advantage to overcome Messi through his national team. With the help of his performance in Euro 2012,  Cristiano Ronaldo has bigger chance to win Balon D’ Or.  Let’s face it, although Portugal didn’t make it to the final, Ronaldo succeeded to fill the expectation as a captain and reached the semi-finals.

But still, to win his second Balon D’Or, Cristiano Ronaldo needs  more than just number of goals.  He needs to improve his skill with the team, and work a bit on his attitude on the pitch.

It’s the end of the road for Portugal team in Euro 2012 competition. The sellecao team were  one step away from the final round, however they have to leave home after a 4-2 loss over Spain team in penalty shootout.

Aside the penalty drama, it was a boring 120 minute match to watch. Both team have failed to perform an effective attacking strategy.

The goal that we expected to see only happened in a penalty duel. No doubt, Spain have won the match by luck. Although Spain lead in the ball possesion, both team were equally strong yet dull on the pitch.

Ronaldo had to cop a fair amount of criticism after blunt performances against Germany and Denmark in Portugal’s opening two games, with rumblings of international retirement being banded about in the press. However, like all great players, CR7 has bounced back to show his worth when it matters, with man-of-the-match performances and three goals against Netherlands and Czech Republic.

After a record-setting domestic season with Real Madrid expectations on the ex-Manchester United forward have gone through the roof, as Portugal rely on the attacker heavily to provide a cutting-edge in the last third. Although Paulo Bento’s men have recorded some good victories in their last games, they will need to step up another level to compete with and challenge world champions Spain.

Ronaldo will know his opponents on Wednesday well, as he will be in direct competition with Los Blancos team-mates Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso, and take-on other La Liga players that he clashes with on a regular basis. That said, the Spanish side will be more than aware of Ronaldo’s threat, and the Portuguese star can expect close attention from the likes of Arbeloa and Sergio Busquets.

Ronaldo’s individual skill and ability to win the game by himself has been shown both for Real Madrid and Portugal in the recent past, but against Spain the Iberian nation will need the star to play for the team, act like a captain and forget about individual ambition. The likes of Nani, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Moutinho and others will strive to aid their skipper and a collective team effort will be need to conquer the holders.

Portugal go into the game as underdogs, and rightly so given the calibre and record of success of their opponents. However, Ronaldo will know that the game and the potential remainder of the tournament give him the chance to write history and put a stake in the ground. As his personal battle with Lionel Messi wages on, if CR7 can captain the Iberian nation to an unlikely tournament victory he would surely command the Ballon d’Or trophy once more, and do something that the Barcelona man has failed to; succeed on the international scene.

Ronaldo’s name is likely to go down alongside some of the greats when he hangs up his boots, but inspiring an unfancied Portugal team to glory in Ukraine and Poland would be a monumental achievement. Wednesday is Cristiano Ronaldo’s date with destiny, as the star attempts to be spoken of in the same breath as Pele, Maradona, Cruyff and the best in the game’s history.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Czech Republic in the Euro 2012 quarter final round last night onced again crowned him as Man of the match. He managed to show his consistency to help the team after his previous 2 goals against Netherlands in the Group stage match.

Although he missed a few of golden opportunities to score, he didn’t give up on trying, and grabbed the chance almost 10 minutes before the match ended.

“Our priority is to made it to the semi-finals, and we are happy for it. We know the next match will be difficult, but I’m confident and ready to fight,”said Ronaldo after he received the award.
