The duo is widely considered to be the best two footballers of the modern generation. The pair dominated the Ballon d’Or for more than ten years between 2008-2018, before Croatia’s Luka Modric finally won the award this year.

Messi, who, like Ronaldo, is a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has once again been in stellar form for Barcelona in La Liga this season, with the Blaugrana looking set to convincingly win the title. Ronaldo’s former club Real Madrid, meanwhile, look to be a shadow of their former selves, having struggled following his departure to Juventus last summer.

Messi and Ronaldo won’t be competing against each other domestically this term, but nor will they face off in the Champions League, either. The Blaugrana, having come through the quarter-finals comfortably after defeating Manchester United over two legs, are now 6/4 favourites to win the tournament outright, according to bookmakers in the UK. Juventus, however, were eliminated at the hands of relative minnows Ajax Amsterdam. The humiliating defeat ironically came after the Dutch club had knocked out Ronaldo’s former side Madrid in the previous round.

Ronaldo was a key part of the Madrid setup over a decade of glory and played a key role in helping the side to win the past three consecutive Champions League titles. In terms of the La Liga, however, it was Messi who got the better of his rival on most occasions. During his stay with Madrid, Ronaldo won two La Liga titles. The 31-year-old Messi, meanwhile, has nine La Liga titles to his name.

Messi told Radio C5N that it was “lovely” playing against his rival in Spain, although he admitted being “annoyed” at having to see Ronaldo pick up so many awards, often at his expense.

The question of who is better between Ronaldo and Messi will always be a topic that is fiercely debated. Messi may enjoy more success as far as the La Liga goes. However, Ronaldo did manage to win Euro 2016 and boasts an international major trophy to his name, something Messi does not.

La Liga officials have long claimed that Spanish employment law forces clubs to attach a buy-out clause to each player’s contract, but these numbers were largely thought to be hypothetical maximums. That is, at least, until Neymar’s €222 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris-St Germain this summer, in which the French cash kings lodged the full amount as a deposit with the league after the Blaugrana attempted to block the move at every turn.

As a result of such ludicrous figures now changing hands, the buy-out clauses of some of La Liga’s top stars have come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks. And, according to the Portuguese star’s contract with Real, Ronaldo is the joint-most valuable player in the world, with his buy-out – and surprisingly, that of teammate Karim Benzema – standing at a stunning €1 billion.

Lionel Messi, by comparison, has a relatively paltry buy-out clause standing at €300 million, with nine La Liga players deemed hypothetically more valuable than him. Of course, a large part of the figure being relatively “low” is Barcelona’s trust in their star man not to leave the club he so deeply cherishes.

While it would seem one billion euros should be enough to deter potential poachers, the past year has shown us crazy things do happen in football, and no amount of money for the signature of Cristiano Ronaldo can now be considered pure fantasy.

Ronaldo received his marching orders in Real Madrid’s 3-1 Super Cup victory over Barcelona on Monday following two bookable offences. The 32-year-old subsequently received a one-game suspension for the initial red card and a further four games for appearing to shove referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea after being sent off.

In his post-match report, the referee described the incident by stating that the player “pushed me lightly as a sign of his disapproval”, with the Royal Spanish Football Federation then having little choice but to discipline the Portuguese superstar.

Real initially appealed against Ronaldo’s second yellow card on the basis of a dubious call from de Burgos Bengoetxea, who booked Ronaldo for diving after he seemed to go down honestly under considerable pressure from Samuel Umtiti. However, the RFEF appeals panel subsequently upheld their decision and the length of his suspension.

As is evident in subsequent social media postings, Ronaldo clearly felt aggrieved by the length of his suspension, stating: “It’s impossible to be unaffected by this situation; five games! It seems exaggerated and ridiculous; this is called persecution!”

Real Madrid was on fire at Bernabeu, when they defeated Barcelona in Supercopa second leg last night. In the first half, the Whites literally squashed their rival, with 2 goals against nothing in just 20 minutes.  We can say that Mourinho has brought Real Madrid to another level.

Gonzalo Higuain scored the opening goal at minute 11th, and soon after that, Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the lead for Real Madrid.

Messi’s goal at the end of first half almost destroyed Mourinho’s plan, but luckily 10 men Barcelona weren’t enough to stop raging players who thinks of the field as their playground. The results, Barcelona player lost their tiki-taka style, and tried to use similar counter attack strategy as Real Madrid. But Barcelona is no master of the strategy, and they have failed despite a couple of nice attempts.

In the end, Real Madrid named as the winner of Supercopa after defeating Barcelona with 2-1.

Cristiano Ronaldo tastes his first trophy for the season after a 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Supercopa second leg match. Ronaldo scored one goal in the game, while the other goal came through Gonzalo Higuain. Meanwhile, Barcelona single goal was created thought Lionel Messi’s amazing free kick shot.

Unlike the first leg match, Real Madrid clearly showed their domination throughout the match. Both 2 goals  were created in the first half, at minute 11th by Higuain, and Cristiano Ronaldo 8 minutes later. And afterwards, Mourinho’s squad managed to give a hard time for Victor Valdes, as they didn’t stop on attacking.

Jose Mourinho should be proud of the boys, since this is practically the first time in Cristiano Ronaldo’s era that Barcelona gets eaten alive for almost the whole 90 minutes by Real Madrid.  I’ve never seen Victor Valdes running around like crazy throughout the game,  and couldn’t catch his breath because he had to work extra.

For captain Iker Casillas, he did a fantastic job by making at least 3-4 important saves. However, he barely sweats in the first half.

Of course, praise goes to Gonzalo Higuain who did an amazing opening goal in minute 11th, that helped boosting the team’s spirit.  Followed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal, 8 minutes later. And after that, the whole field was like a play ground for Real Madrid, as their counter-attack scheme worked amazingly well. 2-0 in Real Madrid’s lead in just 20 minutes.

However, Messi almost ruined the glory after he scored for Barcelona at the end of first half. Although I have to admit, it was actually a brilliant free-kick goal.

Still, Barcelona find it hard to play with only 10 men after Adriano got a red in just minute 28th for his brutal foul on Ronaldo. They need more than just a help from the referee.

Enough said…. Let’s just skipped to the end of the match, since both Real Madrid and Barcelona didn’t score a goal in the second leg.

After a long 45 minutes plus 3 minutes of extra time, the match ended with 2-1, with Real Madrid’s name as the winner.

It was a good game, and Real Madrid have won it fair and square. Hala Madrid !!
