Ronaldo also won the Golden Shoe in 2008 while he was at Manchester United, 2011 with Real Madrid and shared it with Luis Suárez last year.

Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero was a distant third with 26 Premier League goals, while Jonathan Soriano of Red Bull Salzburg came in fourth with 31. Barcelona’s Neymar shared fifth place with Internazionale’s Mauro Icardi, Antoine Griezmann of Atlético Madrid and Luca Toni of Verona.

The award is based on a points system that allows players in tougher leagues to win even if they score fewer goals than a player in a weaker league. Weightings are determined by the league’s ranking on the Uefa coefficients, with goals scored in the top five leagues multiplied by a factor of two and goals scored in the leagues ranked six to 21 by 1.5.

Sunderland’s Kevin Phillips remains the only Englishman to win the award for scoring 30 goals in 2000.

Ronaldo notched a first-half hat trick in an eight-minute span, and scored twice more in the second half on Sunday in a victory which propelled Madrid to team of the week honors.

Munich polled fourth after victory over Dortmund, while Barcelona was fifth after winning 1-0 at Celta Vigo to keep its four-point advantage over Madrid at the top of the Spanish league.

Ronaldo now has more than 107 million likes and as it stands is around 5,000 clear of the Hips Don’t Lie songstress.

Real Madrid – Ronaldo’s own club – limp in at 11th with 83million likes, one place behind perennial rivals Barcelona.

No athlete in the world comes close to Ronaldo, with Lionel Messi the next most popular sportsman down in 13th place. His total of 78million falls well behind the Real Madrid marksman.

It’s not only on Facebook where Ronaldo dominates. He’s also the number one followed athlete on Twitter. His total of more than 34 million followers puts him over a million clear of his nearest competitor who is, surprisingly, one Ricardo Kaka.

Ronaldo may be dominating social media, but he and his team certainly aren’t dominating on the pitch. The ex-Manchester United winger was far from happy with his side’s latest defeat to Schalke in the Champions League last-16.

Missing Big Names

Dejan Lovren wasn’t the only big name left out of the starting line up by Rodgers who also opted to rest Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Mario Balotelli for the 1-0 defeat. It remains to be seen whether Cristiano was on hand to console their families too but there will certainly have been a lot of Liverpool fans looking for a lift when they saw the starting XI.

Lacking Ambition

It could, of course, have been worse for Liverpool, who lost their recent home game against the Spanish giants 3-0 but Rodgers’ decision to rest his stars seems like an acceptance that his team are not good enough to compete in the Champions League. Football experts such as those at bluesq recognise that one of the reasons for Liverpool’s successful league campaign last season was their lack of distractions but now, having qualified for the Champions League, Rodgers must surely be willing to sacrifice league form in order to give it his best shot in Europe. The decision to rest his big names suggests a lack of ambition at Anfield, or a lack of faith in the depth of the squad….either way it is a cause for concern for the Liverpool supporters.

Ronaldo missed Portugal‘s shock defeat by Albania and Real’s loss to Sociedad on Sunday with an unspecified injury.

“My confidence lies on two pillars,” said Ancelotti ahead of the visit of champions Atletico.

“I have a group of professionals that are very concentrated and Cristiano scores a goal a game.”

He added: “Cristiano is on top form. He is in optimal condition. He doesn’t have a chronic injury.”

Atletico boss Diego Simeone will be forced to watch from the stands after being given an eight-match touchline ban for his behaviour in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Real, with assistant coach German Burgos stepping in.

The Rojiblancos broke Barcelona and Real Madrid’s 10-year duopoly by winning the La Liga title for the first time since 1996 and beat Real over two legs to lift the Spanish Super Cup in August.

Ancelotti’s side, who did win their 10th European Cup with victory over their Madrid rivals in May, have not won a league title since 2012 and have started the season disappointingly.

Manchester United loanee Javier Hernandez could make his Real debut from the substitutes bench on Saturday, while big-money summer signings Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez are also expected to be involved.

Colombia’s golden boot winner Rodriguez has struggled to make an early impact since his £63m signing from Monaco, while Real are adjusting to life without Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria and Bayern Munich’s Xabi Alonso.

“I will find the right solution for Madrid,” said Ancelotti. “All the signings and transfers have been given the green light from the coach.

“It’s clear that a new player needs time to adapt. I am pleased with what James has done so far. It’s normal that he might have the odd problem at the start.”

Simeone has already downplayed his side’s chances of defending their league title for the first time in more than 60 years as his side again bid to defy the financial odds.

A summer player exodus saw five of last season’s key players depart, including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and top scorer Diego Costa – both now at Chelsea.

There have also been incomings, though, with France winger Antoine Griezmann becoming their second most expensive player ever after Radamel Falcao when he joined from Real Sociedad for £24m.

“We will go into the game with the idea of winning but we won’t have an excess of confidence. The derbies have been fairly equal recently and we have managed to break a run,” said Atletico defender Junafran.

“The Real fans now look at us differently. They have an incredible team and while some leave others come in. Their president says that they sign the best and that is possible for very few. They cannot complain about the team they have.

“We are a very strong team and we will use our strengths and make the most of them. We will not change our way of playing.”

US Sports Magazine Sports Illustrated have named NBA superstar LeBron James as the world’s best athlete, narrowly beating Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The US magazine has named their top 50 male athletes in the ‘Fittest 50‘ list and the Miami Heat star has beaten competition to be named the best.

Jamaican sprint king gets a rare bronze medal, and there are one or two surprising names in the list that is, unsurprisingly, dominated by American athletes.

“For the professional male athlete it is the very foundation of success. But even among the pros, some athletes stand head and sculpted shoulders above the rest,” read the SI blurb.

The list was put together by SI writers and editors using a 40-point system based on four criteria; strength, speed, endurance and agility.

James scored a perfect 10 in all categories, 1.5 points ahead of Ronaldo, who was perfect in three categories but not in strength, where he scored 8.5.

Bolt was a further 2.0 points behind Ronaldo, with boxer Floyd Mayweather and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant rounding out the top five.

Another two NFL players, Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson were in the top 10, joining Serge Ibaka, UFC fighter Jon Jones and swimmer Michael Phelps.

Just one Englishman makes the list and you’d be hard pressed to guess who it is.

Manchester City right-back Micah Richards makes the list as the 23rd best athlete in the world, scoring a 7 for speed, 6.5 for strength, 6.5 for agility and 8 for endurance.

Followers of the Premier League might be surprised to see Richards on the list considering his injury record in the last two seasons, during which he has played just nine league matches because of injury and lack of form.

Richards is one of seven footballers on the list and, bar Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, they too raise eyebrows.

Hulk, who has battled criticism that he is overweight, and Luis Nani are borderline inclusions, while 35-year-old striker Diego Forlan and Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard could be considered bonkers.

Chris Froome is the only other Brit on the list, at No 45, despite his victory in one of the hardest races in the world last year.

Andy Murray is a surprise exclusion, especially as Roger Federer – always a player who used craft and skill over speed and strength – is at No 31.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal still have a chance to reach the second round at the World Cup. Without him, the advantage might just switch to the United States.

Ronaldo has been carrying an injury to his left knee, and the World Player of the Year was seen using an ice pack on it during training on Wednesday. But he is still expected to play against the Americans today at the Arena da Amazonia in a match that Portugal can’t afford to lose.

“Cristiano played the last game,” midfielder Raul Meireles said, via ESPN. “He trains every day with all of us. Cristiano is fit to play, that’s all I can say.”

Ronaldo has been one of the best players in the world for about a decade, and last year he even surpassed Lionel Messi by ending the Argentina forward’s streak of winning the FIFA Ballon d’Or.

He has also excelled on the world stage, helping Portugal reach the 2004 European Championship final and the 2006 World Cup semi-finals. The team also advanced out of the group stage at both Euro 2008 and the last World Cup, and then reached the semi-finals at Euro 2012.

Ronaldo’s inclusion in the lineup is a good sign for Portugal, but the road to the knockout stage will not be an easy one. Portugal was crushed by Germany 4-0 in its first match and will be without at least four players for the game against the United States. Pepe — one of Portugal’s top defenders — will sit out because of a red card he took against Germany.

Bento had to make multiple lineup changes, but he said those playing against the U.S. will be ready to go.

“The players know who will be playing, they know what they have to do and they know what the opponent does,” Bento said.

Portugal needs to at least earn one point to have a chance at advancing to the next round. The U.S. can clinch a spot in the knockout stage with a win.
