Juve manager Maurizio Sarri cited fatigue as being the reason why the Portugal Captain did not make an appearance during the game.

Sarri said: “We gave room to some of the younger figures who were ready to step up. Ronaldo was very tired, so we decided to rest him.

“Ronaldo was expected to play, but he was not 100 per cent fit due to muscle fatigue. I spoke with Andrea and Ronaldo before the match and we concluded that it would be best for him to rest. Now we have 10 days without games, so we can focus on preparing well in training.”

What happened during the game?

The K-League team played positive football and opened the scoring during the seventh minute following a long-range effort from Osmar. Juve levelled just two minutes later though through Simone Muratore. Team K League again went on to take the lead through a neat finish from Brazilian Cesinha who after scoring performed the famous Ronaldo celebration. After Adam Taggart made the score 3-1 for the K-League Side, Juve scored two quick goals.

Juve fielded a strong side which featured the likes of Matthijs de Ligt, Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain but they were unable to play clinical football. Understandably, they were probably not giving their all intentionally in a bid to avoid serious injuries ahead of the upcoming Serie A campaign.

Juventus are next in action when they play against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on 10 August. They will now have a long break ahead of that game and it is very unlikely that Ronaldo will not play a part in the tune-up game against Diego Simeone’s side.

Ronaldo has been the face of Portuguese football since his early 20s and Messi has also been the face of Argentinian football since his early 20s. Messi has so far scored 414 goals from 445 La Liga games and therefore averages slightly less than a goal per game. Messi may never be able to better Ronaldo’s goal to game record at this stage of his career.

4. Success in different leagues

One of the big criticisms of Messi is that he did not taste success outside of the La Liga or outside of Barcelona. Some critics argue that he would have not have fared as well had he been playing in England.

Messi never played nor won titles outside the La Liga. Ronaldo, by contrast, won three Premier League titles with Manchester United and also helped the Red Devils to win one Champions League title. Luka Modric ultimately ended up winning the most recent Ballon d’Or award to finally end the stronghold which Messi and Ronaldo have had over the award for more than a decade. Prior to Modric’s win, the last man apart from Ronaldo and Messi to have won the award was Kaka of AC Milan back in 2007.

In a surprised move to many, Ronaldo moved from Madrid to the reigning Italian Serie A champions last summer in a deal worth €117 million.

Ronaldo’s agent Mendes has now revealed that the transfer was discussed as early as January.

He eventually switched to Juventus and will be hoping to finally help the Old Lady of Italian football win the Champions League. The reigning Serie A champions take on the Bundesliga titlists at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the early hours of Thursday, the first of four stateside pre-season friendlies for Juventus.

However, due to Ronaldo featuring for his country in the World Cup, he, along with his fellow internationals, have been granted an extended summer break, with the 33-year-old not due to report for preseason training until next week.
