The 24-year-old star winger has played against Barcelona at four occasions in his career already.

The first time Cristiano Ronaldo met the Catalans will always remain as a sour moment for the Portuguese playmaker and his fans.
It was in the semi-finals of the 2008 UEFA Champions League. Cristiano Ronaldo was then a Manchester United player and he was eager to help the Red Devils dominate the team of his rival, Lionel Messi.

Cristiano Ronaldo had the chance to take the game by storm as Manchester United were awarded a penalty in the opening three minutes.

A year later, Cristiano Ronaldo had another opportunity to redeem himself against Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League final in Rome.

He was seen as the most dangerous player on the pitch during the first ten minutes of the game, testing Victor Valdez twice with good long range shots.
But when Samuel Etoâ€o broke the deadlock for Barcelona quickly after, Manchester Unitedâ€s strength faded away.

In the end, Lionel Messiâ€s header in the late stages of the game and Alex Fergusonâ€s bizarre substitutions and tactics rounded up the Red Devils defeat which left Cristiano Ronaldo angry at the manner in which Manchester United had lost.

Lately, Cristiano Ronaldo featured for a bit more than an hour against Barcelona in his first El Clasico. The current Real Madrid forward had a good game and a couple of chances to put Los Blancos into the lead.

He was then taken off and had to endure Real Madridâ€s 1-0 defeat away to Barcelona from the bench.

Now, Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s desire to beat Barcelona with Real Madrid is more than ever intense.

Speaking with Correio da Manha, a sport daily, Cristiano Ronaldo didnâ€t hide his intentions of “facing Barcelona in the Champions League final and beating them”.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, helping Real Madrid to lift the trophy with dazzling performances is never impossible.
The Portuguese superstar just hopes that his body wonâ€t be affected by injury worries anymore.

He told the media:

“I hope I donâ€t have any more injuries and I wish to help Real Madrid winning the titles of all the competition in which we are this season.”

Extending his views on Real Madrid as a team, Cristiano Ronaldo declared:

“I am completely confident that weâ€re going to improve even more until the end of the season.”

But last nightâ€s defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final was a black day in Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s entire career as a footballer.

“This is one of the biggest disappointments of my career,” said Ronaldo. “We were always confident before the game but unfortunately we couldn’t do it.”

Indeed, Manchester United didnâ€t show up their real face and it seemed like Barcelona had killed off their spirit of champions even before the match.

“It is always bad when you lose a final,” said Ronaldo.

“But we didn’t play well. We did okay in the first 10 minutes but you have to say Barcelona deserved to win.”

Ronaldo seemed to single out Manchester Unitedâ€s coach Sir Alex Ferguson as the main man behind the teamâ€s defeat.

“Everything went wrong,” Ronaldo said. “We started well in the game but after we didn’t do nothing. We didn’t control the game and we lost. I think Barcelona played better than us and they deserved to win.”

“Everyone expects Manchester to do something in the game and it didn’t happen,” Ronaldo said. “(We) didn’t play fantastic, (we) didn’t control the game, we didn’t do the right thing, we lost goals and that’s what’s happened tonight.”

Messi didnâ€t beat me, Barcelona beat us.

With Messi rounding off the victory for Barcelona, it was inevitable that football fans around the world would chant songs portraying Lionel Messi as the winner of the duel against Ronaldo.
But the reigning World Player of the Year came up in disagreement of this obvious opinion.

“No, the game was between Manchester and Barcelona, it wasn’t a duel between anyone in particular.”

Either way, Messiâ€s header and 38th goal of the season will certainly land the Argentine forward all the major individual awards this year. But Ronaldo prefers to concentrate on the future:

“I’m sure I’m going to play more finals,”

Indeed, Ronaldo might reach many more finals in his club career… but with which team? Manchester United, really?

How the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United unfolded

Barcelona started the game on a bad note with Valdez showing signs of nervousness at the back. For exactly ten minutes, the Red Devils were threatening with constant attacks. Ronaldo struck an excellent free-kick from 30 yards which almost caught Barcelonaâ€s goalkeeper Victor Valdez. Positioned as a striker on the pitch, the World Player of the Year managed to have some good cracks on goal.

With six minutes gone down the clock, Ronaldo tried his luck again with a long range effort quite similar to his wonder strike against FC Porto. But the ball flew wide, allowing Victor Valdez to breathe at last. The Portuguese winger also gave another scare to the Blaugrana with a low shot from inside the 18-yard box. But the unlucky aceâ€s ball just couldnâ€t roll across the line.

But the devastating moment soon came when Manchester United were caught on the counterattack led by Barcelona’s Iniesta. Etoâ€o was there to punish the Red Devils and give Barcelona the lead after just ten minutes, squeezing the ball past Van der Sar and ultimately into the net.

From there, Manchester United were only chasing shadows. The Red Devils – dressed in an all-white kit on the night – just werenâ€t able to show up their real character of champions.
Manchester Unitedâ€s midfield were brushed away by Barcelonaâ€s men, which came as a huge blow to Ronaldo upfront who was looking for balls. Barcelona had won the war of possession; Manchester Unitedâ€s spirits were down.

Ronaldo got few chances though, but his strength in the air was overpowered by Carlos Puyol might. Either his headers will go wide, or he wonâ€t succeed in connecting the crosses.

At a point in the first half, Manchester United were just about to equalize when Ronaldo blinded Barcelonaâ€s defense as he broke through. However, his terrific run was eventually stopped by Gerard Pique and the former Manchester United defender received a worthy yellow card.
But then in all, Manchester United never posed any serious threat of pulling a goal back. It seemed like they had no fire in their bellies, no tonic in the pot.

And then, the devastating moment: Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s challenger, Lionel Messi, raised high above everyone to complete a cross by Xavi from the right wing with an awesome header. The ball flew high and hard, beating Van der Sar in the process. At 2-0, the Red Devils had been deeply wounded and completely devastated.

Ronaldo struggled to contain his frustration at losing in what he branded as the biggest game of the season. He became harsh on the ball and was guilty of bad tackles against Puyol especially. Ronaldo finally received a deserved yellow card. The Portuguese Star winger knew his dream of making history with Manchester United had come to an end.

The final whistle wasnâ€t far away though, meaning that Manchester United had been defeated by Barcelona in the final of the Champions League in Rome.

Cristiano Ronaldo stayed on the pitch like the rest of the players, waiting for his medal. A face of disgust and sorrow painted with boldness and the desire to come back stronger… this is what Ronaldo showed as the atmosphere was filled with grief on one side, and joyfulness on another.

This is a behavior from Cristiano Ronaldo that will comfort his grieving fans. The 24-year-old is no more the little chap that used to burst in tears in dejecting moments. He is now the man that will rise up after being brought down, with inner tears making him stronger.

Unfortunately, no goals to talk about for Ronaldo, nothing for Manchester United either. It is surely over for the reigning World Player of the Year. Messi certainly will come next as the king of the world.

But bad moments in life can also make you stronger. Ronaldo might be back next season!

The race for the top scorer award might have surely crossed Ronaldoâ€s mind when being substituted against Manchester City a couple of weeks ago, but the 24-year-old Star winger fully assured the public that he was focused on nothing else but Manchester Unitedâ€s game against Barcelona in the final of the Champions League.

The World Player of the Year has done it again! Like in Porto where he showed up with a magnificent strike to send Manchester United into the semis, Cristiano Ronaldo raised himself up against Arsene Wengerâ€s youthful Arsenal squad on Tuesday night at the Emirates.

A 1-0 advantage was never enough for the Red Devils to feel comfortable and secure, going into the second leg of this Champions League semifinal clash. Before the game, Cristiano Ronaldo had voiced out his anger at the refereeâ€s performance at Old Trafford which added to Manchester Unitedâ€s lack of luck and efficiency in front of goal.

Ferguson had promised everyone that the European defending champions would go in Tuesday nightâ€s game with the intention of scoring at all cost, while left-back Patrice Evra was convinced that a good defense will be the key behind success.

Arsenal started fiercely and Ferdinand almost got caught into an early own goal. Almunia had revealed that the solution to beating the Red Devils was to gain possession, and Arsene Wengerâ€s boys meant to do just that. Manchester United perhaps didnâ€t impose their game like they did at Old Trafford a week ago, but the Reds†ability to capitalize on Arsenalâ€s numerous mistakes in midfield proved to be the key to glory.

Anderson played in Ronaldo at the left hand side who had to use his pace to chase the ball before powerfully sliding it to Ji Sung Park in the penalty area. The Korean benefited from Kieran Gibbs†slip in the box and before Arsenalâ€s defense realized, Park had already hammered the ball across the goal line to score for the first time ever in the Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo was in confident and upbeat mood from the whole start – winking and smiling at the camera at the fans†pleasure. Ferguson decided to play him as a center striker in the first half, with Rooney wide at the left and cutting into the midfield at times, while Park played in the right wings.

Almost all of Ronaldoâ€s touches were without defect but the best of all was just about to come. The Portuguese winger was awarded a free-kick after Arsenalâ€s flop on the day – Kieran Gibbs – harshly brought him down.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck the ball hard and stunned everyone as the ball flew like a rocket to hit the back of Almuniaâ€s net inside the near post. Who was expecting that Ronaldo would score directly from nearly 40 yards from this right-hand sided free-kick? 2-0 the score line was after only eleven minutes gone down the clock; Cristiano Ronaldo had raised the bar too high for Arsenal to get back into the game.

The score remained the same at half time, meaning that the Gunners needed at least four goals without reply in the second period. However, Manchester United continued from where they left off in the first half, leaving Arsenalâ€s youngsters confused and perplex.

The Gunners thought they could pull a goal back from a corner as they looked to have found some power upfront, but were instead punished by Manchester Unitedâ€s flamboyant attacking forces.
The ball was cleared away only for Cristiano Ronaldo to cap a superb counter-attack. The Portuguese winger made a wonderful back heel to find Ji Sung Parkâ€s feet who then burst forward as Manchester United broke away. Park fed Wayne Rooney who was waiting for the pass on the left hand side while Cristiano Ronaldo was also making his run. Rooney then squared the ball back to Ronaldo who ultimately fired the ball past goalkeeper Almunia at in the roof of the net.

3-0 it was at that stage and Cristiano Ronaldo had broken Arsenal supporterâ€s hearts with his double on the night.

However, Manchester Unitedâ€s wonderful night was somehow tarnished by Fletcherâ€s sending off moments later for bringing Fabregas down in the penalty box which allowed Van Persie to pull a goal back for the Gunners from the spot but this was only a consolation.

Ronaldo was just about to get his hat-trick when he fired in a low shot as Arsenalâ€s defense opened up again, but Almunia got his save right this time.

All the same, Cristiano Ronaldo did enough to help Manchester United crush Arsenal on their own ground. The Red Devils are the first team to score at the Emirates in the Champions League this season.

Ronaldo might have been disappointed a week ago for not having a perfect 50th Champions League appearance under a red jersey, but last night was yet another special moment for the World Player of the Year.

His two goals sealed Manchester Unitedâ€s 4-1 aggregate win over Arsenal. The European defending champions have now booked their place for the final in Rome on May 27. Speaking to Sky Sports after the victory, Man of the Match Cristiano Ronaldo underlined his confidence and desire to reaching the final in Rome and help Manchester United to be the first team to retain the Champions League crown:

“I have always believed we were going to win it again,”

“That is what we have been trying to do and now we are in the final, so we have a great opportunity,” Ronaldo declared.

“It was not an easy match. Arsenal are a good team, so to score three goals at their own ground is just amazing.

“The whole team were superb and we deserve to be in the final.”

Then reflecting on Darren Fletcherâ€s dismissal, Ronaldo concluded:

“I am tremendously disappointed for Darren,”

“He has played in most of the games and now he cannot play in the final. He deserves to – but that is football.”

The reigning UEFA Top Scorer – who has now netted four times in his last five Champions League games – has increased his tally to four goals in Europe and twenty-five in all competitions. After being able to score against Inter Milan, Porto, Arsenal, and Chelsea (the referee wrongly disallowed Ronaldoâ€s brace), who can dare to say that Cristiano Ronaldo doesnâ€t show up on the big stage against big teams?

Ronaldoâ€s dream for the quadruple this season is still alive. Five more goals – including one in the final at the Stadio Olimpico – and Cristiano Ronaldo will fulfill his dream of scoring thirty goals this season with his last one being in Rome…

If I had to choose my best moment last year as a Manchester United and Ronaldo supporter, I honestly wouldnâ€t know what to pick up. But if I have to say what my greatest relief was, I wouldnâ€t be afraid to reveal it (even though there could be Chelsea fans around me =D):

Witnessing Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s header in the Champions League final gave me a lot of relief because I felt the trophy was just inches away from the Reds†fingertips. But after Lampard hit the equalizer, Chelsea managed to send the game into extra-time and penalties.

Cristiano Ronaldo had missed a penalty against Barcelona in the semi-finals and he was out to correct himself and score his second goal of the night.

At my anguish, Ronaldo simply missed Manchester United third penalty kick.

It then seemed to me as the sky was falling down on the Red Devils; It was up to John Terry to convert the kick of his life and send the Blues triumphing all around the cold atmosphere of Moscow. My distress was so that I even didnâ€t want to watch this moment really. To think that Ronaldo was the unlucky number of the night was frustrating and sad.

And there came my greatest ever relief in football, when Chelseaâ€s Captain John Terry astonishingly put his penalty wide!!! Van der Sar completely went the wrong way, with the face of goal wide open to the English defender; I couldnâ€t believe my eyes, even weeks after the final! I felt more relief than joy and excitment. Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo were saved.

The Reds eventually went on to win the trophy with Van der Sar being the hero of the penalty shoot-out. But for me, if someone ironically deserved praises, it will have been Chelseaâ€s John Terry – who in fact wasnâ€t suppose to take the last kick according to Avram Grant. Thanks for allowing Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldoâ€s greatest nightmare to fade away, dear JT!

Imagine how it will have been if Terry had not miss his penalty kick. The world would have been falling down on the Man of the Moment, Cristiano Ronaldo.
No Golden Ball, no Fifa Player of the Year Award of course… these are only for winners; the awards would have certainly gone out to this “Honorable-Mister-Righteous-Messiah-Messi” that I hate more than anything in football!

As for Ronaldo, he would have been branded as 2008â€s biggest disappointment.

A Champions League final that had everything, what a drama. As many of you believed Cristiano Ronaldo scored, he did 1-0 with a nice header. Chelsea came back and equalized. The match went to extra time but without any goals the penalty-shootout was a fact.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and was ready to take his penalty and he…..missed. What looked so good suddenly turned out to a nightmare for the superstar. Which soccer betting fans could have predicted that?

“I don’t know what to say, I thought we would lose when I missed”

But after that both Terry and Anelka missed their penalties for Chelsea and Manchester United won the title, despite Ronaldo’s miss.

“I thought it would be the worst day of my life, but the lads believed and we won it even despite my miss. I’m very proud of them. The penalties are a lottery. I think we deserved it because we played better in the whole game.

“Now it’s the happiest day of my life,”
