In Spain, it’s becoming accepted that Ronaldo has won, and Spanish media group El Chiringuito claim to have a scoop on how this has impacted on Leo Messi.

El Chiringuito claim that Messi has been informed that he’s set to cede his trophy of 4 years to Ronaldo, and that he now doesn’t want to attend.

Chiringuito’s Morales said: ‘A Real Madrid official is aware that Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon D’Or.

When Messi heard this, his first reaction was to cancel his participation.”

If it transpires that Messi boycotts the ceremony, it will speak very poorly of the 4-time winner; though one would think common sense will see through and that he’ll attend and congratulate Ronaldo.

Although he didn’t score in other crucial games, Ronaldo more than made up for those matches with four goals when Portugal’s World Cup berth was at stake.

For the last four years, Ronaldo has been the bridesmaid to Messi, but that is about to change.

The Portuguese is favorite to win the award for the second time in his career based on his record 69 goals and 17 Assists this year for club and country in the calendar year, with Franck Ribery and four-time winner Lionel Messi also in the reckoning.

Cristiano Ronaldo has clinched two trophies within 48 hours to add to the growing, glowing collection in his personal museum opened last week in his birthplace  Madeira, Portugal. Along with the Globe Soccer Award, which he garnered 58% of the votes to Messi’s 9% to win, the forward has also been presented with the Man of the Year award by Portuguese sports magazine A’ Bola.

When asked if he thought he deserved to win the 2013 Ballon d’Or?, He told A’ Bola:

“I don’t know if I deserve to win it this year. I’ve been in the top three for the last six years and in the FIFApro Team of the Year for the last seven or eight, so I really have nothing more to add.

“My numbers speak for themselves. What I’ve achieved, in some way, is key to winning individual awards.”

“Do I deserve to win it? Maybe I deserved to win it last year or the year before. I’d like to win the Ballon d’Or every year i nominated. I like winning everything, but I know that it doesn’t depend on me. I’d like to win it, but sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, that’s just life.”

The winner is scheduled to be announced at FIFA Ballon d’Or gala in Zurich on 15th January.

Cristiano Ronaldo the A’ Bola Man of the Year also discussed the friction that existed between himself and former Los Blancos manager Jose Mourinho, saying he would not mind to work with him again.

Ronaldo is the clear front-runner and a cursory glance at the statistics reveals exactly why. For one thing, he has scored 69 goals, more than his two rivals combined, in 2013. This season he has struck an average of 1.5 goals per game and set a Champions League group stage record of scoring nine goals. He has also overtaken Pauleta and Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time top goalscorer. Ronaldo has produced arguably the individual performance of the season too, even if Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Luis Suarez may offer counter arguments. Ronaldo has been at the very top of the game for years but this season he has somehow managed to take his game up another notch and wherever you look, the numbers are mind boggling.

He has scored 66 times in 2013 (Ribery and Messi combined have scored 64) including 56 in 46 appearances for Real Madrid but will finish an incredible year on a personal level without any silverware.

Rumours of a Ronaldo return will always be around and speaking to MUTV, Moyes was effusive in his praise for Ronaldo and kept the option open for him to return.

“Everyone at Manchester United would tell you he is the best in the business anyway,” Moyes told MUTV.

“I have not been fortunate enough to work with him but there is still hope some day it might be possible.”

United could not have turned down an £80 million offer from Real Madrid for Ronaldo because of his desire to move to Spain but that price looks like a bargain now. He also single handedly steered Portugal the World Cup and deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year. He is unstoppable.

A day after picking up a Golden Boot award for scoring 46 league goals last season, the 26-year-old paid respect to his Real Madrid rival.

“I don’t know if Cristiano Ronaldo is at his peak but he is always there scoring goals in all the games and taking part in his club and national side,” Messi told Spanish sports daily Marca and other European sports journalists.

“He has been doing that for many years and whether he is at his peak or a bit less makes no difference.”

The 28-year-old Real Madrid star Ronaldo is emerging as the favorite to pick up this year’s Ballon d’Or for the world’s best player over four-time winner Messi.

Ronaldo scored a hat-trick on Tuesday as Portugal beat Sweden to qualify for its fourth straight World Cup finals and he tops the Spanish league scoreboard so far this season with 16 goals in 13 matches.

Messi has 11 goals from eight games in the league this season but has been sidelined for up to eight weeks with a muscle tear in his left hamstring muscle.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a Real Madrid fan, told public radio he would back Ronaldo for the Ballon d’Or award if he had a vote.

“I think he is in impressive form. He is a player who gives everything. Yes, I would vote for him,” Rajoy said.

The Portuguese’s chances seemed to rise even further when FIFA announced a two-week extension to the voting deadline until November 29, citing a weak turnout, and allowing participants to change ballots already cast.

Messi has won the last four editions of the award with Ronaldo triumphing in 2008.

Those two and winger Ribery, whose club side won the treble of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup last season, are widely considered the leading candidates for the trophy.

Bayern are the most represented club in the list with six nominees.

The German league has the most nominations with seven — Borussia Dortmund’s Poland forward Robert Lewandowski joining the Bayern contingent — followed by Spain with six, England five, France four and Italy one in the figure of Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo.

No-one playing their club football outside Europe got picked.

Players from 15 different nationalities were nominated with Germany — who have five including Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil — the only country to have more than two.

Manchester City’s Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure, the current African player of the year, was the only footballer outside Europe and South America to be nominated.

Now retied former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is on the coaches list, although another retiree Jupp Heynckes, who led Bayern to their treble, is expected to triumph in that category.

The winners will be announced on January 14 after a vote by coaches and trainers of national teams as well as selected journalists

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has been crowned the best player on the planet four times in a row, but Ronaldo will be hoping to end that run when the 2013 winner is announced in January.

Messi, Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery and Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic are also expected to be in the running for the award.

But Real coach Ancelotti has no doubt the Portugal captain would be a worthy winner.

The Italian told TV programme El Larguero: “It’s Cristiano’s moment to win it ahead of Messi and Ribery.

“He has surprised me the most with his professionalism. He’s very serious, he has amazing attention to detail. It’s that which helps us the most – he doesn’t just score.”

Ronaldo has already scored 21 goals for club and country this season and he will be eager to maintain his outstanding form in Saturday’s  most awaited La Liga clash with Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo said in an interview published on Wednesday that he would love to win this year’s Ballon d’Or but it would not be the end of the world if the prize went elsewhere.

“If I win, perfect. If I don’t, never mind, life goes on. But obviously I’d love to win because i deserve this prize. I’m not going to lie or be hypocritical,” the 27-year-old Real Madrid forward was quoted as saying on the Portuguese football federation website.

“Fair or unfair, the decision will be what it will be… I’ll maybe be very happy or maybe very sad. But that’s life. I can’t live according to an individual prize,” the 2008 Ballon d’Or winner added.

“It won’t be the end of the world if I don’t win,” Ronaldo said, adding that careers were defined more by team prizes than individual ones.

Ronaldo, Messi and the Argentine’s Spain team-mate Andres Iniesta are the three players shortlisted for the award, which will be presented in Zurich early next month.
