Ronaldo scores two goals as Real Madrid destroy Marseille 3-0 in the Champions League
As predicted, the game proved to be a close contest until Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock just two minutes before the hour mark.
The Portuguese superstar, who scared Marseille’s keeper in the first period with a couple of terrific long range shots, received a beautiful pass from his compatriot Pepe. The ball flew about sixty yards from the midfield to the penalty area before reaching Ronaldo who controlled it well.
Unfortunately for Marseille, there was misunderstanding at the back between goalkeeper Steve Mandanda and his defender. So it was left alone with Ronaldo who calmly drove the ball across the goal line to break the dead lock.
Suddenly, things began to change as Real Madrid were in front. Cristiano Ronaldo made a dazzling run down the left hand side, skipping through a defender and attempting to blind the next one as he reached the box. However, he was heavily tackled by Souleymane Diawara and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot.
Diawara received his second yellow card of the game and was ultimately sent off from the field of play. It was Kaka’s turn to be on the scoring sheet for the third time in three games and the Brazilian superstar didn’t miss his chance. He converted his penalty kick sending the keeper the wrong way.
Three minutes after, Real Madrid went on the attack again. Benzema and Kaka played a beautiful one-two before the former Lyon striker squared the ball to Ronaldo who was waiting in the box. Cristiano Ronaldo made an easy tap in to score his second goal of the match and his fourth in Europe this season. Ronaldo’s double also took his tally to nine goals in as much as seven games.
However, his good game finished on a bad note as he had to marche out of the pitch injured. Ronaldo couldn’t last any longer and had to be substituted at the 68th minute.
Apparently, the knock he received by Souleymane Diawara and which resulted in the penalty cost him his health.
Ronaldo was spotted making angry and frustrated faces.
The current world player of the year had to watch the rest of the match on the bench with his right leg protectively wrapped. Kaka then came off as well and decided to seat beside Ronaldo. Cameras showed Kaka cracking jokes but Ronaldo seemed to be distracted by his injury as he didn’t look to follow the stories which he was being told.
Well, fortunately enough for Ronaldo, Real Madrid protected his goals as they conceded none. The match ended 3-0 in favor of Los Blancos who top Group C with three points.
Now one question could resound in the back of one’s mind:
Is the voodoo priest’s curse working on Ronaldo?
The € 94 million signing proved his worth with a brace on Wednesday night. However, he couldn’t escape being plagued during the game. Doctors will indicate how bad that injury was. In any case, this could be the beginning of more troubles to come.
