Perez – Ronaldo a deserving winner

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has poured praise on Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal star was awarded the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or. After being tipped by Betfairahead of the ceremony, Ronaldo picked up the award for the world’s best player in Zurich, pipping Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who had won the crown for the last four years, and Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery for the award.

After winning his first Ballon d’Or in 2008, Ronaldo has been forced to wait four years for his next award, with long-time rival Messi dominating the voting in the years in between Ronaldo’s two victories. With over 40 goals to his name in all competitions this season, Real chief Perez has admitted the 28-year old was the deserving winner.

“Justice has been done because he’s the best player in the world. He’s an example to everyone. We Real Madrid fans are very happy and it’s a special day for us all. When the best player is chosen once a year, it’s an honour to have him in our team.”

“I don’t want to exaggerate, but this is not just about the Ballon d’Or but also about the recognition for a leader in football who always wants to achieve more,” admitted Perez.

Perez will now be hoping his star player can continue his sensational form and lead the club to this year’s La Liga title. Currently three points behind leaders Barcelona, Real and city rivals Atletico have already been written off by some punters, with the Catalan giants expected to defend their title.

As well as La Liga, Real are also very reasonably priced in the Champions League odds to win the tournament this year. It would certainly top off an incredible 12 months for Ronaldo if he did lift the Champions League trophy for a second time.
