Cristiano Ronaldo equals Messi’s record for most Champions League goals scored in a season

The two greats of the modern-game try to outdo each other again, so let’s enjoy them while they are here.

With his goal against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night in the quarter-final first-leg, Real Madrid‘s Cristiano Ronaldo took his total for the competition this season to 14 goals, equalling Barcelona forward Lionel Messi‘s record from 2011/12.

It was a fine goal from the Portuguese forward to equal the record, collecting Luka Modric‘s perfectly-weighted pass before dribbling round goalkeeper Roman Wedenfeller and tapping into an empty net to score the third goal of the game at the Bernabeu and put Real Madrid one step closer to reaching the semi-final.

Most goals in a Champions League season

14 – Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

14 – Lionel Messi (Barcelona 14)

Ronaldo may have got one over his great rival by winning the Fifa Ballon d’Or this year, but Messi is closer to breaking another incredible record this season – chasing down Raul to become the all-time record Champions League scorer, although Ronaldo is not too far behind.

Most goals in the Champions League

67 – Lionel Messi (Barcelona 67)
