As well as European success, Real Madrid are on course for the La Liga title in Spain. It could be their third triumph in the last five years. One and a half years have passed and European glory has not yet arrived, with Juventus a distant sixth at 11/1 to win the trophy this year when putting a Champions League bet on, behind the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich. Some fans of the Turin giants believe that Ronaldo is a hindrance, he is now 34 years old and his stats are clearly not what they used to be when he plied his trade for Real Madrid and Manchester United. The Bianconeri has endured a less than ideal start to the new season and this has led to questions surrounding the future of Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is now approaching his 35th birthday. He will be looking to win as many trophies as possible between now and the end of his career and possibly another Ballon d’Or or two along the way. He, however, does not have time on his side to be playing for a developmental project. He needs to be playing for a club which can challenge for all major honours, most notably the Champions League.

Juventus are looking rather one dimensional in terms of their football at the moment. Manager Maurizio Sarri does however still have the January transfer window to try and find a solution to his club’s woes. If he does manage to find a solution in January, things could work out well for both the club and Ronaldo.

As one of the most marketable names in the Sports industry, Ronaldo will have several offers to choose from, including from elite clubs if he decides to embark on a new challenge at the end of the season. It would be a fitting end to his career if he makes a return to Old Trafford to help Manchester United become a dominant force again. United were, after all, the club that made Ronaldo into the superstar that he is today.

However, United are not a world-class club at the moment and this could hamper his chances of landing major silverware if he were to join them.

Despite dominating the Serie A in winning the Italian title consecutively for the past eight seasons, Juventus have struggled to get past the final hurdle in the Champions League. Many felt the club-record fee move for Cristiano Ronaldo, which exponentially improved their popularity, would be the icing on top to take them to Europe’s pinnacle.

However, last season the Bianconeri were in for a rude awakening after losing to a young AFC Ajax side in the quarter-finals in a tie where they comfortably had the best betting odds of the knockout stages. They decided to let go off manager Massimiliano Allegri, with Sarri coming in to usher in a new era for the reigning Serie A champions. However, his start to the new job has been rather topsy-turvy so far.

There’s a need for immediate results in the huge expectations from Italy’s best side, with winning the Champions League being at number one. Now, Juventus fans would probably swap a season of not winning the league title for winning the Champions League, but that won’t come easy.

Their captain Giorgio Chiellini is still out for a lengthy period, while their attack doesn’t look the most compelling either. While Aaron Ramsey’s brought that attacking bite with his clinical nature in the final third, Adrien Rabiot’s yet to properly implement himself into the side.

Sarri has done a remarkable job in improving the ageing stars like Gonzalo Higuain, Blaise Matuidi and Sami Khedira, but he must trust younger legs to handle the Champions League’s intensity going forward. Cristiano Ronaldo will probably be a man on a mission after watching Lionel Messi win another FIFA’s The Best award, as Sarri must revolve his attack around the Portuguese.

Regardless of his age, Ronaldo is still a game-changer with his decisive strikes and will only get better as the season progresses. If Juventus can get the best out of him, hold a strong defensive line with Matthijs De Ligt and Leonardo Bonnucci and bring more urgency to their game, winning the Champions League would be a stark reality this season.

However, he surprisingly agreed a one-season deal with PSG during the summer of 2018. This was presumably to have one final chance to win the Champions League. Buffon is one of the best goalkeepers of all-time and has won virtually everything that there is to win. The only two trophies which have eluded him are the European Championships on the international front and the Champions League on a club level.  He did play in three Champions League finals with Juventus and lost them all.

Buffon is expected to act as cover for Wojciech Szczesny this season. He will likely retire from professional football at the end of the season (this time for real) and take up a coaching role behind the scenes with Juventus.

“He hasn’t said anything about it, but we’ve spoken because he’s someone I’ve admired and we’ve faced each other many times,” Ronaldo said, as quoted by Marca.

“He told me he was happy that we are together now, and I said the same because, in my opinion, he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the best.

“Him and Iker Casillas are in football’s history books and I’m happy to be with him because he’s a five-star man.”

It will be interesting to see Ronaldo and Buffon as team-mates

It will certainly be interesting to see two of the modern-day greats playing alongside each other. The duo have never been team-mates prior to this though they did play against each other many times. Many people will remember Ronaldo’s stunning bicycle kick for Real Madrid against Juventus during the Champions League in early 2018.

Buffon will also now have one final chance to win the Champions League. While he is now second-choice keeper at Juve, Szczesny tends to be inconsistent at times and it will not be surprising to see Buffon called up for first-team duty at some point this season.

Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored by a Real Madrid player as well as the most goals scored in a single season for Manchester United. He has won virtually everything that there is to win in the game, and his signing to Juventus in 2018 has seen the Italian giants start the two Champions League campaigns that he has been at the club, among the favourites to win the competition. There wouldn’t be many clubs that could match the financial figures that United could offer their former number seven and a final season in the Premier League could interest Ronaldo.

Sporting Lisbon

Another heartfelt final season could see him plying his trade back in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon. The Portuguese club was where Ronaldo was spotted by many of the top clubs around Europe and could be a chance for the star to return the favour in the opportunity the club gave him by helping deliver a first Primeira Liga title since 2002.

It would certainly be an option that Ronaldo would be interested in, but the Juventus star would certainly have to take a major pay-cut in order for the move to go through. Whether or not that is something that the club are interested in doing remains to be seen, but it would certainly be a move that would send shockwaves across Europe and see Sporting become a serious player in European competition.

MLS

Ronaldo has always been a player with various other projects going on, and maybe the most logical place for Ronaldo to end his career could be in the USA, where he would have the chance to expand his audience to a North American audience. The star has always been keen on a move to the USA, and there would be a host of clubs interested in acquiring his services should he be interested in playing in the MLS.

LA Galaxy would be a notable destination for the winger, while David Beckham’s new franchise Inter Miami CF could be the perfect storm. Inter Miami aren’t entering the MLS until next season which could line up perfectly with Ronaldo’s plan, and a chance for Ronaldo to spearhead a new franchise may be too good to turn down.

Ronaldo would also go on to have a love-hate relationship with former team-mate Wayne Rooney with the duo undergoing many highs and lows during their years as team-mates.

Forlan struggled at United

Forlan may have won the best player award after the 2010 World Cup and be a Uruguayan football legend but he largely struggled to establish himself during his time at United. During his time with the Red Devils, he went on to score just 10 goals from 63 appearances. He would go on to endure better success in Spain with Villareal and Atletico Madrid, the latter whom he helped to win the inaugural edition of the Europa League during the 2009/10 season. Forlan may be right in that Ronaldo puts a great deal of effort and thought towards his presentation as compared to the average footballer, though it may be debatable whether he can be considered to be an “egotist” because of that.

Ronaldo has also outdone Messi on the international stage

The comparisons between Ronaldo and Messi will likely never end even once the duo have retired. Another area is which Ronaldo has performed better than Messi is on the international stage. CR7 has two international titles to his name which are the 2016 European Championship as well as the inaugural UEFA Nations League. Messi by contrast has never won a major international tournament. He ended as the best player during the 2014 World Cup but his country subsequently went on to lose the final against Germany.

It can also be argued that Messi plays alongside more gifted team-mates for Argentina while Ronaldo by contrast has been viewed as single handily carrying Portugal in professional football for more than a decade.

The youngster has drawn comparisons to Red Devils legend Wayne Rooney. Since bursting onto the first-team scene back in 2015, he has gone on to make 112 Premier League appearances so far and found the back of the net 29 times. Rashford does still have plenty of flaws in his game, one of which is his finishing. However, he is still only 21-years-old and will get better and likely iron out many of the errors in his game during the next few years.

Rashford grew up during a time when Ronaldo used to dominate the headlines for United so in all probability, he idolizes the Portugal international. So far, it certainly does not look like Rashford is as talented as Ronaldo and Messi. The latter duo were already regarded as world-class and among the best in the world when they were 21. Rashford by contrast is a quality player but it would be an exaggeration to say that he can currently be considered to be among the best in the World. Nevertheless, he is capable of developing into one of the best and can help lead United to silverware which is something that they have been lacking since 2013.

The 21-year-old is expected to lead the line on a regular basis for the Red Devils this season following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan. He will be hoping to emulate the heroics that Ronaldo performed at Old Trafford between 2003-2009.

Rashford certainly started the season well on Sunday as United romped to a 4-0 victory against Chelsea as he went on to bag a brace. The other goals on the day came from Anthony Martial and Daniel James who came on as a substitute.
