The Laureus World Sports Awards today named the 32-year-old amongst their six-man shortlist for their World Sportsman of the Year 2017 prize, with Ronaldo being joined by Lewis Hamilton, Mo Farah, Chris Froome, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal in the voting.

Despite holding five Ballon d’Or trophies, the Real Madrid superstar has never won the Laureus award – despite being nominated four times since 2009. However, despite not having the greatest end to the year, the Portugal captain will be hoping he can add to his European Sportsperson of the Year title by winning on the world stage.

Organised by the Laureus World Sports Academy, an organisation that promotes the use of sport to bring people together for good, the awards will be voted on by a panel consisting of a number of world-leading sports editors, writers and broadcasters.

‘Great team effort’

The winner will be revealed as part of a glittering ceremony in Monaco on February 27, with a number of other categories also set to be voted on.

“We had a fantastic year at Real Madrid and I know I wouldn’t have been nominated if it wasn’t for our great team effort,” Ronaldo said upon learning of his nomination.

“I want to thank all my teammates and also the world’s media for having placed me among the candidates to win this very special award.”

Taking place during the Dubai International Sports Conference 2017, the Globe Soccer Awards saw Real Madrid make a clean sweep of the prizes on offer. In addition to Ronaldo’s individual award, his manager Zinedine Zidane was named Best Coach of the Year, while Real were presented with the Best Team of the Year accolade following their memorable La Liga-Champions League double. The Portugal and Real Madrid star beat out stiff competition from the likes of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and tennis superstars Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer to claim the title, which was awarded by the Polish Press Agency earlier today.

With 26 news organisations from across the continent casting their votes in the poll, the awards have come to be an internationally recognised fixture of the end-of-year festivities in world sport. According to Los Blancos’ official website, the 32-year-old received 159 points in the ballot, placing him comfortably ahead of Hamilton (143), Federer (124) and Nadal (113).

It’s been yet another remarkable year for Ronaldo, who played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s La Liga, Champions League and Club World Cup successes, as well as lifting the prestigious Ballon d’Or for an astonishing and record-equalling fifth time.

Can Ronaldo make 2018 his best ever year?

In the 2016-17 season, the star managed 42 goals in 46 appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions. He’s got his work cut out to replicate that success in the current term, however, with Los Blancos languishing in fourth place in the La Liga standings; 14 points behind runaway leaders Barcelona. To his credit, Ronaldo has scored nine times in just six European appearances – but has managed to find the net only four times in 12 league starts.

Being recognised as Best European Sportsperson for the second consecutive year should ensure that the Portugal international enters 2018 with even more determination to succeed on both an individual basis, and for Madrid. And, with the World Cup looming in Russia next summer, Ronaldo will once again have the opportunity to prove that his plaudits are justified on the world stage.

This will be the sixth consecutive year either player will take the trophy home, with Diego Forlán being the last striker to win the award prior to Messi and CR7 dominating the ranking.

Each league is assigned a difficulty number from zero to two, which is multiplied by the total amount of goals a player scores in his domestic league. With Ronaldo and Messi playing in La Liga, their goal scoring totals are multiplied by 2. Right now, the Portuguese striker leads the pack with 78 points, followed closely by Messi with 72.

Antoine Griezmann completes the podium with 44 points. During his first season with Atletico, the Frenchman has established himself as Los Colchoneros’ go-to guy, particularly since the year 2015 began. Griezmann has scored 16 goals so far this year, making him the second most prolific scorer behind Messi. The only team in the world to have two strikers among the top ten is Barcelona, having Neymar tied with Alexander Meier and Diego Costa with 38 points.

Whoever wins between Messi and Ronaldo will be establishing a new record. Both players have won it three times, and with the closest opponent trailing them by 34 and 28 points respectively, these has turned into a two-horse race.

Ronaldo will be up against some ferocious opposition from stars such as Lewis Hamilton, Rory McIlroy, Novak Djokovic — to name a few — when the winner is named in a glittering ceremony here on April 15.

Serena Williams, nominated for Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, will be hoping for her record-equalling fourth Laureus Award, but she is challenged by the emotional appeal of China’s Li Na, who won her second Grand Slam in 2014, but had to retire later in the year. Among the other Nominees in this category are Winter Olympic gold medallists Tina Maze and Marit Bj Rgen.

Wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden, who won the marathon Grand Slam of Boston, Chicago, London and New York for the second straight year, will be hoping to win the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award after missing out last year.

This time, in a very strong category, her opponents include Roman Petushkov, the first athlete to win six gold medals at the Winter Paralympics and Anna Schaffelhuber, who won all five Alpine gold medals at Sochi.

Nominees for Laureus World Comeback of the Year include Schalk Burger, who returned to South African rugby after beating life-threatening meningitis and Italian footballer Francesco Acerbi who beat testicular cancer.

Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore, six-time world surfing champion, will be bidding to win her second Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year Award. Her opposition includes Gabriel Medina, Brazil’s first ever men’s surfing world champion, and American skateboard sensation Nyjah Huston.

He easily beat four-time winner Lionel Messi and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in a vote of national team captains and coaches from FIFA’s 209 member countries, plus selected journalists. Cristiano Ronaldo received 37.66% of all votes ahead of Lionel Messi (15.76%) & Manuel Neuer (15.72%).

Ronaldo retained football’s highest individual honor after scoring 61 goals for Real Madrid and Portugal last year. His record tally of 17 in a Champions League season helped his club win an unprecedented 10th European Cup title — and overshadowed a relatively disappointing World Cup campaign.

Ronaldo was more composed for this widely expected victory than during his tearful speech one year ago when ending Messi’s four-year reign. He first won the award for 2008 as a Manchester United player.

On hearing his name read out by French great Thierry Henry, Ronaldo closed his eyes, dipped his head and smiled before walking to the stage.

“It has been an unforgettable year,” Ronaldo said after taking a deep breath.

Germany midfielder, Nadine Kessler, claimed her first-ever FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award. Germany coach, Joachim Löw, and compatriot Ralf Kellermann, coach of VfL Wolfsburg Ladies, were named as FIFA World Coaches of the Year for Men’s and Women’s Football, respectively. The winners were chosen by the coaches and captains of national teams as well as by international media representatives invited by FIFA and France Football.

International players’ union FIFPro also invited 24,000 professional players from around the world to vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI, the best team of 2014, with the following result: Manuel Neuer (Germany) in goal; David Luiz (Brazil), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Sergio Ramos (Spain) and Thiago Silva (Brazil) in defence; Ángel Di María (Argentina), Andrés Iniesta (Spain) and Toni Kroos (Germany) in midfield; and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Arjen Robben (Netherlands) in attack.

The FIFA Puskás Award for the best goal of the year was also presented after 3.3 million football fans cast their votes on FIFA.com, FIFA on YouTube and francefootball.fr. This award, which honours Ferenc Puskás, the captain and star of the 1950s Hungary team, was won by Colombian midfielder James Rodríguez, who demonstrated perfect technique to give his side a 1-0 lead over Uruguay in the round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup (final score: 2-0). Rodríguez topped the poll with 42% of the votes ahead of Stephanie Roche (33%) and Robin van Persie (11%).

The results of the survey, carried out by Uruguay‘s El Pais daily and released on Tuesday, showed 89 of the 144 reporters queried named the Real Madrid forward as the region’s top player.

German goalie Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) and Argentina’s Lionel Messi (Barcelona) came in distant second and third places, with 19 and 16 votes, respectively.

Ronaldo “was again the grand star (of Real Madrid), winning the coveted Champions League title for the tenth time,” the daily said.

Ronaldo also leads the Spanish League’s 2014-2015 season scoring table with a total of 25 goals, the daily added.

In other categories, the title of Europe’s best coach went to Argentina’s Diego Simeone, who coached Atletico Madrid to win the Spanish League’s 2013-2014 season and the Champions League final of the Union of European Football Federations (UEFA).

Simeone, who garnered 68 votes, is the first non-European coach to win the prize since the survey was first carried out in 1991.

Real Madrid were the big winners at the sixth edition of the awards, with Los Blancos named club of the year, Florentino Perez best president of the year, Carlo Ancelotti best coach of the year, and James Rodriguez named revelation of the year.

Ronaldo is nominated alongside Manuel Neuer and Lionel Messi for the Ballon d’Or—which will be awarded in Zurich on Jan. 12, 2015—after a year which included a second Champions League victory for the 29-year-old.

He broke the record for most goals scored during a European Cup campaign, scoring 17 times in 11 matches, and he has already netted 25 times in 14 La Liga appearances this term.

After helping Madrid win its first-ever FIFA Club World Cup title, Ronaldo and his son made the four-and-a-half hour plane flight from Morocco to his birthplace in Madeira in order to personally receive the region’s highest honor.

Ronaldo was born in Santo António (a civil parish in the northeastern part of Funchal, the capital of Madeira), which is the most populated city outside of the mainland of Portugal. Santo António is also home to the Museu CR7, which is a museum dedicated to the achievements of the Portuguese winger.

The Portugal international arrived at the Sea Square around noontime where an 8-ft tall, 1,800–pound statue in his likeness was unveiled in front of hundreds of people.

Ronaldo signed autographs and posed for pictures with the locals before making a brief speech to the gathering.

“It is an honor to be back in Madeira, where I grew up and I have my roots and my family,” the Real Madrid forward said. “This is something that has a very special meaning to me, and it is a huge privilege to be here with the Madeiran people.”

Ronaldo’s mother was also present at the ceremony and was visibly moved by the proceedings and the player himself acknowledged that the tribute had touched him deeply.

“I hope that 2015 will be just as good as 2014 and we can win everything we have won this year,” Ronaldo concluded. “Especially the Champions League.”

“Thank you for this important and historic moment. I will hold it in a special place in my life.”

“Thanks to all who have helped me. It gives me motivation to achieve more and more in my career. It is a special day.”

Ronaldo will now have a few days to rest before he links up with his teammates prior to Real Madrid’s final match of 2014 – a friendly against Italian giants AC Milan on December 30th in Dubai.

The candidates for the best player award are Ronaldo, Benfica’s legend Eusebio and former Real Madrid midfielder Luis Figo.

The winner will be decided by the fans, who will vote through the FPF’s official website.

Ronaldo has also been nominated to be included in the Best 11 of the Century, the Best 11 of All-Time and the Best Contemporary 11.

Los Blancos striker is favourite to win all individual awards this year, including the Ballon d’Or. Even Barcelona fans such as former Azulgranas player Jonathan Soriano recognise Ronaldo should win the award.

“For what he did during last season, the Ballon d’Or should be for Ronaldo. Manuel Neuer is an excellent goalkeeper, but what Cristiano has done is spectacular. As the most complete player I would pick Messi, but Ronaldo deserves to win this year,” the Spanish striker said.
