The national coach Carlos Queiroz, the team captain Cristiano Ronaldo and sporting director FPF Carlos Godinho, yesterday (9/6/2010) visited Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, at his invitation.
Currently with 91 years, the hero of the fight against apartheid honored the Portuguese delegation to this call. Just this week confirmed the presence of Mandela in the opening game of proof, that Friday, between Mexico and South Africa.
Nelson Mandela rarely leaves home and agreed to go to the game after strong insistence by FIFA.
The three elements of the Portuguese delegation traveled to Johannesburg, the home of former president, and missed the safari tour with the rest of other players. For information, Portugal players was scheduled in a safari tour for the day and Nani, despite his injury still join the trip.
There was no explanation for the invitation, but it should not be too strange since Mandela always has a passion for sport and the presence of strong Portuguese community in South Africa. Not to mention the fact that Carlos Queiroz has already been a coach of South Africa.
Queiroz, Ronaldo and Godinho join the party only at the end of the visit in order to return together to Magaliesburg. And today they will get back and training before the World Cup 2010 opening tomorrow (11/6/2010)
