Barca 0-0 Man U as Ronaldo misses Penalty
Filed Under Champ. League | 2 Comments
Ronaldo had a chance to put United ahead after 2 minutes when Gabriel Milito handballed his header. However in a rare lapse he sidefooted his penalty wide and hit the post. He then had a blatant penalty turned down when he latched on to an errant pass from Andres Iniesta and Rafael Marquez got his body in the way bringing Ronaldo down in the box. The ref refused to give it though.
Barcelona dominated the match, having over 60% of the possession, but did nothing with it. Utd were good defensively with a reworked backline - with Wes Brown at centre-back and Owen Hargreaves filling in at right-back. Nemanja Vidic withdrew from the game due to a stomach problem.
Van der Sar did well to save a number of strikes, but nothing was too demanding for him. Most were from outside the penalty area.
In the end a 0-0 draw is not ideal, but it could be worse. Utd just have to keep up their good defense at home and score one goal.

Ronaldo silences Europe critics

Manchester United grabbed 2 crucial away goals against Roma in the first half quarter final tie against Roma tonight. Ronaldo and Rooney we on spectacular form.
Ronaldo scored in the 39th minute from an amazing header. He covered a massive amount of ground to meet Paul Scholes’s cross and fire the ball into the back of the net. His momentum left him a little dazed, but he soon got back to his feet and had a host of near misses.
Rooney’s goal was less of a spectacle. Park’s header from Wes Brown’s cross was parried by the keeper and Rooney bundled in from inside the 6 yard box.
Roma played well and had a lot of the ball, but failed to convert any chances, with Van der Sar only having to make one save. United were a bit swamped after the break when Roma tried to come back from 1-0 down, but it didn’t last long and late on it could have ended up 5 or 6-0 to Utd.

A skillfull header and a classic Ronaldo penalty helped Utd ease to victory in a game they could well have scored double. Manchester United went all-out attack in this game and really showed the poor defence of their opponents.
Rooney scored to continue his good run as well as a 2nd for Ferdinand in as many games.
Dynamo Kiev got a goal back when Utd’s defense lapsed during a corner in the first half, then scored again towards the end of the game from a nicely struck low shot to van der Sar’s left, which he should have saved.
All in all, a very attacking game on Utd’s behalf which will surely please boss Alex Ferguson.
