Cristiano Ronaldo to battle for Laureus Sportsman of the Year award

Cristiano Ronaldo could bag yet another prestigious award come March 26th this year if he manages to shrug off competition from Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, LeBron James, Rafael Nadal and Sebastian Vettel.

All outstanding sportsmen in their various sporting genres, they have all been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, an award that has never before been won by a footballer

CR7 had an amazing 2013, scoring 69 goals for his native Portugal and Spanish club Real Madrid to break his 2012 record of 63 goals. His exploits on the pitch saw him walk away with the highly coveted Ballon d’Or for the second time in his career and helped Portugal secure a qualification spot for the World Cup showdown in Brazil come June. Could this be Ronaldo‘s year?

The Portuguese’ opponents are not by any chance easy to conquer, however. To pinpoint just one of them, Usain Bolt, who is easily the fastest man alive, has won the award 3 times including the last time out (2013).

Cristiano‘s nemesis, Lionel Messi, has been nominated four times while the Portugal captain has been nominated twice, the last occassion being in 2009.

Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid – The Return of the Legend

Something is surfacing in the centre of Europe. A sleeping giant whose hands and feet cannot be contained by the Schalke 04 players before he awakes at the Veltins Arena. Cristiano Ronaldo has returned.

The Champions League returns as does Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid commander returns to the ranks to lead the attack for Ancelotti‘s soldiers in a land where the team has failed again and again in its desire for conquest.

And he will do so with the anger accumulated during three weeks’ suspension in La Liga, only playing in two games – the Copa del Rey semi-final games against Atlético.

Having served his three-match ban in La Liga, the Portuguese comes back into the team for the start of the European competition‘s Round of 16. He makes his return for a round in which he has flourished over the last two years. In fact, he has scored in four consecutive matches in this stage of the competition.

In 2012 Real Madrid breezed past CSKA Moscow in the Round of 16. The Whites drew 1-1 in Russia thanks to a goal from Cristiano, who was also the star of the show in the Santiago Bernabéu, scoring two of the four goals that would secure the side’s passage to the quarter-finals. Last season it was Manchester United who suffered the wrath of the Portuguese striker. He got the equaliser (1-1) at home and scored the Whites’ second in Old Trafford, which decided the tie (1-2).

Nine goals in this 2013/14 season’s competition

Aside from his recent performances in the Round of 16, it is worth remembering that Cristiano has already scored nine goals in this season’s Champions League. A figure that smashed the previous goal-scoring record in the Group Stage of the tournament.

The Portuguese is having his best goal-scoring season and must now make up for lost time after serving his ban. He is still the Pichichi (top goalscorer) in La Liga with 22 goals, but Ibrahimovic‘s two goals against Leverkusen oblige him to score to recover the lead on the continent. In Champions League against Schalke, he will be looking to increase that number and help his team reach the quarter-finals.

It will be the first time Ronaldo steps foot in Gelsenkirchen, and he is keen to score in Germany. Since he joined Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo has only failed to score against Dinamo Zagreb.

Barca’s 3-1 loss at Sociedad, Real Madrid moves to Top in La Liga

Gareth Bale scored a blistering long-range strike to help Madrid brush aside Elche 3-0 at home, and Barcelona was unable to match that with a win. Instead, it was overrun by Sociedad’s dynamic attack led by forwards Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela.

Four days after affirming its European credentials by toppling Manchester City, Barcelona slumped to a stinging 3-1 loss at Real Sociedad to relinquish the provisional Spanish league lead to Real Madrid on Saturday.

Barcelona’s defeat confirmed the change in course in the league title race over the past two months, leaving Madrid in command and waiting to see if Atletico can keep up when it visits Osasuna on Sunday. After starting the season with 13 wins and a draw, Barcelona has dropped points in four of its last seven games.

The loss left Barcelona three points behind Madrid, the first time it has trailed its fierce rival this season. Atletico is also three points behind Madrid before it plays on Sunday.

Madrid will visit Schalke 04 on Wednesday in the Champions League final 16 enjoying an unbeaten streak of 26 games in all competitions. Madrid then plays at crosstown rival Atletico next weekend in a highly anticipated league meeting.

CARLO ANCELOTTI ON RONALDO BAN

Cristiano Ronaldo‘s suspension was a whole mess from the beginning. A mess that clearly has Carlo Ancelotti a bit angry:

”No one is happy with this situation. I don’t find his suspension normal or the fact that they didn’t reduce it one game nor that they waited until 2:00 pm to let us know that Cristiano wasn’t allowed to play. This is unbelievable. Nothing happened from a practical point of view because we won playing well but about this situation, I don’t understand it and I won’t forget it.”

Cristiano Ronaldo wanted by David Beckham for his new Miami MLS franchise

The former England midfielder is believed to be looking into a deal that will take the Portuguese to Major League Soccer in three years’ time.

David Beckham wants to make Cristiano Ronaldo his first superstar signing for the Miami franchise, according to a report.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder is believed to be looking into a deal that will take Ronaldo from Real Madrid to Major League Soccer in three years’ time.

An MLS source told The Sun: ”Becks understands the need for a big, big name in the team when it gets going.

”And none come bigger than Ronaldo — the world’s greatest player. Ronaldo loves America and all that it offers.

”It’s not a secret he has thought about finishing his career here, about living here — so a deal like this could be perfect for him.”

The source claimed that any potential deal would be in 2017 – at the earliest – but that the possibility of signing such a global icon showed Beckham’s ambition for his franchise.

Ronaldo, who turned 29 this month, would be in his early 30s by the time any move to the US went ahead.

Beckham outlined plans for a new Miami-based MLS franchise last week. No date has been set for the team to enter the league yet though.

Cristiano Ronaldo takes his Ballon D’Or to Home

Cristiano Ronaldo will take the FIFA World Player of the Year trophy (Golden Ball) he recently claimed as Ballon d’Or Winner to home Madeira on Saturday.

With the weekend free due to his three match suspension, the Portuguese star will travel home to spend some time with his family and while there he will present the recently won trophy to home fans at his CR7 museum.

Ronaldo is set to travel on Saturday morning to Portugal. He will then return to Madrid on Monday evening in time for training on Tuesday with the rest of his colleagues after his side’s game on Sunday at Getafe. Ronaldo will have one eye on resting up ahead of his side’s return to Champions League action the week after next.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk named hottest couple, beating the Beckhams

According to the Daily Mirror, Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo and his supermodel girlfriend Irina Shayk have been chosen as the hottest couple in football, leaving behind David and Victoria Beckham.

In a poll conducted by FreeBetNegotiator.com, Ronaldo and Irina, who have been dating since 2010, garnered 18 percent votes to top the list of most attractive couple, followed by David and Victoria with 14 percent votes.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and wife Antonella Roccuzzo holds the third place with 11 percent votes, while Ex-Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and Alex Gerrard have been ranked fourth.

Rounding out the top five are Barcelona’s Gerard Pique and singer Shakira with eight percent votes.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores twice as Real Madrid cruise into King’s Cup final

Cristiano Ronaldo netted two early penalties to give Real Madrid a 2-0 win at King’s Cup holders Atletico Madrid on Tuesday which sent them into the final 5-0 on aggregate.

Real, who have not conceded a goal in this season’s competition, are likely to meet Barcelona in April’s showpiece as the record winners lead 2-0 against Real Sociedad ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final, second leg in San Sebastian.

”I think the first leg was the key as a 3-0 lead meant we were very well set for the return,” Real goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas said in an interview with Spanish television broadcaster Canal Plus.

”And then scoring the two early penalties meant the tension was taken out of the tie,” added the Spain international.

”We did our job and got through to the final and now our focus turns to La Liga and the Champions League.”

Real’s 3-0 win in last week’s first leg at the Bernabeu was sweet revenge both for their bitter 2-1 defeat to Atletico in last year’s final and a 1-0 reverse in La Liga at the end of September.

Atletico, missing suspended top scorer Diego Costa, faced a huge task to turn the tie around in the return across town at the Calderon and they got off to the worst possible start when teenage defender Javier Manquillo tripped Ronaldo in the penalty area in the sixth minute.

The Portugal forward smashed the spot-kick past Daniel Aranzubia and things went from bad to worse for the home side when Emiliano Insua felled Gareth Bale and the referee awarded another penalty.

Atletico forward Raul Garcia had crashed a shot against the post minutes earlier but Ronaldo buried the penalty into the corner to make it 2-0 with only 16 minutes gone.

Ronaldo, who is serving a three-match La Liga ban after being sent off for violent conduct, had an eventful end to the first half when he was booked for an aerial challenge on Manquillo and was hit on the head by a cigarette lighter as he left the pitch at the break.

The FIFA Ballon d’Or winner did not appear to have sustained any injury and played most of the second half before making way for Jese.

Manquillo landed awkwardly and suffered neck damage before being transferred to hospital for checks as Atletico slipped to their third straight defeat, including Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Almeria in La Liga. Fortsätt läsa Cristiano Ronaldo scores twice as Real Madrid cruise into King’s Cup final
